hi just wondering if anyone can help.

We have a nearly 2 (in jan) stb bitch. She had her first season last november and in Jan had a phantom pregnancy (coincided with me having my daughter?) vets advised waiting untill after her next season then spaying. Now she hasnt been in season as far as i can tell since and tbh with a young baby i completly forgot about it. now she's having another phantom pregnacy with out as far as i can tell having had another season.

Its heartbreaking :( she's moping around crying and making nests stealing my DDs toys to mother and i know theres nothing i can really do to help :'(

Does anyone know if we have to wait for her to have another season to be spayed or if it's just advisable? and how usual is it that she doesn't seem to have had a season since her first? do some dogs just not "show" if so how do i tell when she's had a season to know when to book her in?

I ring the vets for a chat on Monday but i thought i'd see if any of you guys had any ideas :)

If she is under 2 her seasons may still be a little erratic, and she may have had a very short or silent season prior to this phantom. Personally I would think if you wait a clear month or so after the phantom you would probably be okay to have her spayed. As you say your best plan is to discuss with your vet on Monday, hope she settles down soon.

has anyone had a bitch spayed so soon after a phantom? i can't find anything on the net except they should be spayed between 2 seasons but not sure if this is a best case or a must do? Would like to have as much info to hand as poss before i call my vets as although they're very good and i trust them with my animals im not so sure i trust them with my finanaces :/

yes i have.my westie had phantom at 5 months! she started producing milk etc and vet gave me something to stop it.she advised spaying 2 months after this which was done when she was about 7/8 months old.

A phantom usually occurs at the time a bitch would whelp, i.e. 9 weeks after a season, if you leave it a month after the phantom it should theoretically be 3 months after her last season, therefore midway between seasons, which is what the vets recommend.

Do not spay until you have got her emotional state over the phantom,Galastop from the vet should do that well. Then wait until she is mid-way between seasons;obviously she prob had a season about three months ago,so get a spay done a couple of weeks after she is emotionally normal.
IF she is spayed whilst in the middle of a pseudo she may remain emotionally disturbed for a very long time.
