i have a 2 yr old filly that i bought last july on the 26th she'd been in a field left for 2months prior to buying her and we were told they couldnt garuntee wether shed been with a stallion or not. 2 weeks ago i noticed her teats had swollen and grown, acouple of days later she had milk in her udder and her belly began to swell. now all the milk has gone from her udder but she still has a big belly. she is eating alot but struggling to keep condition, lies down alot and her vuvlva is relaxed. Any ideas?

hi, i got the vet to her and shes not having a foal. she lost it at 2-3 months but her hormones carried on with the pregnancy causing her to get an udder.

Sounds familiar.....my mare had a full phantom pregnancy last year. She lost it after 70 days (had a scan and it was there then ) but the hormones took over and her waistline gradually expanded over the winter months. We were on foal watch last spring and had the dropped belly, bagging up and no seasons.... but three weeks after her 'due' date she was rectally examined and was found to be empty.

Its frightening how real the phantom pregnancy can be..... your mare should get back to normal in the next few weeks. Mine got sent back to stud and took after the third AI cycle.... I honestly believe her hormones had gone haywire!

Luckily she caught whilst at stud and last week had a lovely filly foal! :-)

My mare seems to be having a phantom pregnancy at the moment too. She was scanned all well and in foal last year. Due date was 25th May and a few days before this i had the vet out to castrate a colt so asked him to do an internal as she didnt look as well as she did on her other 2 pregnancies. Vet said she was empty but has today started bagging up, suddenly gone absolutely massive to the stage she is wobbling and we also have wax!

Yep..... we had wax too, although after the rectal examination she came back into season within a week or so!

Out of interest is your mare turned out with other broodmares and foals? Mine was and I'm sure this contributed. This year she has been kept seperately form the other broodies and thrived!
