My German Shepherd has started to behave really strangely....she's normally a quiet dog but has started an almost constant whine, she keeps going under beds and tables in the house and in the garden is digging under the table and bushes and laying in the hole. I can't think of any reason for her behaviour except we got a kitten about a month ago who has decided as it's cold she wants to snuggle with the dogs and I've noticed that Tiki has started lifting her back leg to allow the kitten access to 'feed'. This has made me think that she is either starting a false pregnancy or thinks she's already given birth. Has anyone else experienced this with their bitches?

Yes my dobie had one bless her. She collected toys and put them in her bed as her puppies. She even produced milk. She became quite defensive of her "puppies" with people and actually bit my Dad for trying to take one. However she let me take them. I had her speyed after her first season so it never happened again.

Yes and also please be very vigilant she doesn't eat anything she shouldn't while trying to mother it (two pairs of tights and a ££££ vet's bill taught us this) I would also book her in for a spay as we nearly lost same bitch to pyometra which (as it commonly does) developed from the phantom.

Thank you for your replies. She's due to be spayed in January as I've seen pyometra in bitches so always make a point of spaying. I'll keep an eye on what she's eating although she's quite a fussy eater normally so hopefully she won't develop 'pregnancy' tastes!

She's definitely mellowed :) Unfortunately the agility club we were going to closed so once she's recovered from her spaying I'm going to see about taking her to a new club. It's such a shame that I find something she loves to do and it shuts down :(
