My girl is coming on quite nicely now but when trying to school on the flat she lacks impulsion and is quite lazy sometimes. It's difficult to keep her in trot for more than about 20 seconds at a time. So when trying to school this really doesn't help.

For those of you who know little or nothing about her she's probably just about 4 now. We don't know her date of birth but she was a 2005 foal. She's 14.1hh and a heinz 57 but we think there's definitely a fair bit of Welsh D in there. When we got her she'd done pretty much nothing apart from walked and a little bit of trot down country lanes. We have recently heard a few horror stories from a previous owner. Apparently they bought her from a dealer around feb time as being 3, nearly 4. Things didn't go to plan lots of rearing and bucking (which doesn't happen now) and so returned to dealer. It wasn't until after they'd been galloping round fields and popping jumps that they noticed her year of birth on passport was 2005 not 2004. So in effect they had been galloping round a 2 year old. This led to us being able to understand my girl better and work with her very slowly. Hopefully the physical and mental damage it has caused will be minimal.

So no I need to ask if the lack of energy is due to her age and is just a phase which we will break through with increasing fitness(she is not completely unfit) and schooling, or if I should be feeding differently to give more energy so that she can do what is asked of her.

She is currently being fed 1 scoop of hi-fi lite, 3/4 scoop of A&P Hacking mix(medium energy) and benevite advance split between two feeds. Don't want to up the amount of feed as she is already putting on a bit of weight with the lovely new grass coming through.
She is being ridden approx 4 days a week. She is schooled 1-2 of these days and does road work and fun stuff in the field on the others. When schooled she is ridden between 20-45 minutes depending on how well things are going. Road work is 20-35 mins depending on route in walk with a couple of short trots. She is walked out in hand for 15-20 minutes at least once a week on days that she isn't ridden. So do you think it's a phase or down to feed?
Advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

does she differ when between schooling and hacking? I've had a couple of youngsters who completely switch off when schooling because they find the menage boring, so to liven them up i do their schooling in the field, or in the menage with lots of poles lying around to trot over.

I wouldn't have said she's working too hard for the amount of feed she is getting, and most liven up with the spring grass coming through anyway.

she should be able to do 20 mins work at least even with no hard feed. if she seems healthy then traing in the right way should help. my young horse rarley do more than 20 mins in the school. i always bring them out knowing i could get a bit more out of them this way they give me evrything theyve got for 20 mins rather than giving a bit over an hour. u could try getting her to trot for a few steps then lettin her rest as a reward, gradually build up the amount of time she trots for.

Bit of a late reply but we don't have great hacking, only road work. But she is more willing to trot for longer on roads than when schooling. We don't have a menage so have to school in a field. She is getting better and try to break it up with stuff that's a bit more fun.
