Follow on to Friday's "How do they manage these things post". For those who missed it, my horse broke a wolf tooth in his stable, tearing the gum and generally making a mess of himself. I was very worried about him having it removed as he's 18 and panics under sedation.

He's had it removed today, all is well, most of it came out in one piece, just a bit of root left that had to be dug out and a bit of broken jaw

Big hole and lots of blood, apparently. I can't collect him from the vets until about 16:30.

Bad news is........ I can't put a bit in him for about 3 - 4 weeks

I can probably ride him in a hackamore, though this is a VERY forward going TB, and I think I'm going to be over the hills and far away!! Suggestions/experiences anyone??

The other thing that's pi$$ed me off is, I told the vet specifically that I wanted to be there when he was sedated (because of the panicing) and they just went ahead and did it without calling me

Anyway, just thankful that neddy is OK and insured!!

More Pimms and strawberries for reading!!

Aww bless him, glad he is okay! I'd recommend the Dr Cook's bitless bridle as they seem more effective on flighty tb types than the old 'nose pressure' type of hackamore

I use to ride my 'very' forward TB in a hackamore and was fine. Aslong as it is fitted correctly.

In regards to not being there when he was sedated this is going to sound really strange - we use to find that animals that 'paniced' were 9 times out of 10 much better when thier owner was not with them.

Hope he heals quick so you can get on with fun things!!

Thanks Hellspells, that's what my vet said. Unfortunately they don't take into account his upbringing in Hong Kong, which taught him to be very defensive!!! I've lots of anecodatal evidence that he's much better when I, or someone he trusts is present eg standing on back legs with farrier, standing like donkey when I'm there.

My point is, I do know my horse better than they do and I'm cross they've disregarded a direct request!

I'm going to try the hackamore (in an enclosed space!!!

) and see what happens as someone can lend me one. Not sure I can justify buying a bitless bridle for the sake of a few weeks...

God I completely read the wrong the first time - that your farrier stood on your horses hind legs - think I need more sleep

I don't think I could justify a whole bitless bridle for a couple of weeks either. Fingers crossed he gets better quick!
