Phillip Dutton DSQ?

"American Phillip Dutton, who finished 16th in the individual round on Connaught, was disqualified from the competition when he contravened the FEI horse welfare ruling, introduced in February this year, that horse boots should weigh no more than 500g."

loads of people use weighted boots, i didnt realise there was a rule on the weight of them, i am sure i am not the only one, so feel a little sorry for phillip dutton as i expect the different in weight was only a gram or two.

This is from the USEA site:

"Unfortunately Dutton was eliminated from the individual portion of the competition because he inadvertently broke FEI Rule 257.253 for using illegal equipment. Connaught was wearing a pair of hind boots that were too heavy under this new rule incepted in February. Neither the Chef d'Equipe Mark Phillips or Dutton knew about the rule. There was never any intention to operate outside the rules."

That rule has been discussed extensively on here and someone emailed BE to see if they were implementing it too. I certainly knew about it and I don't use weighted boots. I seem to recall BE didn't have a specific rule about it but do have a rule about welfare and would use that one if the situation arose.

Just goes to show you need to make sure you have read the rules and double-checked them too.

I have a fairly heavy pair of leather tendon boots. They're not intended to be weighted but I think I might go and weigh them now. I didn't know about this rule. Is it 500g per boot or per pair?

I'm sorry but "inadvertently??" Neither of them knew the rule?????

It's been the rule since February and no-one thought to check and double check the rule book before the biggest competition of their lives??

No it just doesn't ring true to me

so r u allowed to use weighted boots at BE or not?

Yes you are, but IIRC they don't have a weight rule like FEI do, they have a 'if the steward deems it to be affecting welfare' rule. I am sure there is a thread about it on the BE forums.
