phonophoresis uses ultrasound to enhance the effects of topical medication. know that dmso is/was commonly used in USA (at least in humans - footballers and the like) as a muscle rub but it smells so utterly disgusting that I could never bear to use it.
don't know what effect dmso would have on the skin (imagine it would dry it out - but that's just a guess) but sure that your vet would explain. hope it helps, anyway!
