These are 22 out of 200 personal photos that I took over the course or the weekend (I took over 2000 for the professinoal company); I spent friday and saturday at a large Russian show, assisting the main photographer. I have been given permission to show these photos on the condition that I don't mention the name of the company, showground or riders; and just to clarify, these aren't the pictures that will be sold, the ones by me being sold were of the under 1m junior division.

These pictures are from the 140 and 150cm classes, and have been posted in both CR and PG, feel free to post any suggestions, of how you would like to see competition photography, angles and composition etc

Wow fantastic photos!

When I'm looking at pics of me competing I always look for the photos take side on so that I can see my leg position and hands and the shape the horse is making over the fence.

I rarely buy pics taken front on like 3rd image as I think it tells me less about my position and the horses jump, and I just prefer the side on shots.

Also I would concentrate on taking the fence from an angle where it looks at it's largest. I have 2 pics from this season over big square table xc but both taken from the kanding side so you can't see the extra parts of the fence in front of it and you don't get a very good idea of the dimensions of the fence.

Hope that help

love the 2nd to last pic of the grey! And quite like the 6th to last, the lady on the chesnut.

I think side on pics are good when its a oxer, providing there isn't too much decoration on the fence.

Yes thankyou, very helpful! It was my first time taking SJ pictures, so I was kind of making it up as I went!

Thanks again, I'm hoping that I get asked to come back and take more

WOW great Photos!

If you are doing a few pictures of each competitior a combination woul dbe great, Like chole said its nice to see your postition etc but i also love some of the photos that are taken closer up. I love the first Photo and the really close up of the horses head and chest.

Now I like the 3rd one but only if a bit more cropped to tighten in on the horse.

I agree though in general side on is good although some very good photos can be taken dead straight this angle is hard to achieve (without a nice course builder!

) and you have to get the timing dead on normally just at highest point of arc and you need a rider who actually looks up over the fence

So for ease if you are looking to sell pics they are best from the side with as little jumpwing as possible getting in the way!

Also I don't know if you have adjusted them or not or it may just be my computer but the contrast seems very high, so although some of the colours are very bright it means some of the horses (the dark bay cantering especially) have lost detail and definition. But as said it 'might' be my screen!

Overall thoguh some very nice photos which are crisp and well focused.

Thanks, the actual photos that are for sale from the smaller classes have a variety of close ups, side shots and one that show the position of riders.

The advice is much appreciated

None of the pictures are retouched, other than to change the sizes, I believe that the company are retouching the colours and contrast on the 'proper' photographs.

Thanks for the help!

great pics! i prefer the side-on pics too, or slightly from the front so can really see expression on horse's and rider's faces. close-ups from the side can look really good too. you've taken some fabulous pics there.

Thanks, I never thought it would be as hard as it was, I have so much more respect for event photographers now.
