Could be better, could be worse. I don't think he's a complete laughing stock. I got carried away in the throat region. Certainly the liveryman element clippers are more than up to the job, even on a hairy pony. 70 quid well spent!

Excuse the tiny saddle cloth - he always falls between sizes and this was a failed ebay order :-)

I've spent all summer trying to re-grow the base of his mane - now he's rugged again it's falling out in handfuls - shall I hog, pull or try and rescue it with a neoprene type thing?

And after...

I ended up hogging my cob, after i woved i would never make him have to have a hog again in his life, because the rug did the same as yours but mine was shorter, i like it in winter easier to keep clean with mud and it grows back quite quickly so it looks like its newly pulled anyway, so i am not too worried.

Not a bad job at all. Not being picky but the bit above his first legs you should have followed the line of the muscle, you can actually see the line on the bottom pic, same angle as yours (which you did very well to do that so straight incidentally!)

I'd pull the mane to the same length then you could let it all grow if you want to.

He looks great! I would pull if I were you but then that's just my opinion.

Not a bad effort at all :D

I would agree with the above comment, although hogging wise, I think you could get away with that too and its so much easier to deal with a hogged mane in the winter than brushing out mud everyday, although I really think that where his mane has grown back at the base of his neck looks a really nice length on him, why not pull it to that length and if you don't like it, then hog it out, but there is the chance that if you pull it, by thining it and getting rid of some of that length he wont get so hot under the neck rug and the hair wont rub out so easily

He also looks like he could deal easily with you leaving the neck undone and folded back on his rug, or if not, next time you look to change rugs, have a look at the Mark Todd, out of all the rugs and methods that I tried with my girl this was the only one that did not pull her mane out, doesn't work with every horse, but I was really impressed with it.

Thanks for the comments guys :-)

Ah - I was wondering what the rule was for the top of the leg... so I guessed :-)

I'll know for next time.

I was wondering whether I could get away with taking the neck off (it's detachable... but didn't know whether that would be a big no-no after clipping.

I think if I can't save his mane I might go for pulled rather than hogged... decisions...

I would whip the neck rug off, my boy used to be fully clipped in the days before neck rugs and out fine, Ebs had no neck rug and was fully clipped and out at day because of the risk of loss of mane... again absolutely fine. Essentially your boy has a fully covered neck anyway so I would say youve got no problems with doing away with the neck rug, he looks like he can handle it :D And I agree, if it were me I would pull that mane, I think it would really show his neck off... go for it and show us the results when its all nice and tidy :D

Great job for a first clip! I would pull very short. My boy has the neck rug off and he has a full clip. Your boy will be fine with that clip and no neck cover :D

The pulling comb has now been purchased... I'm just working myself up to use it. I was so set on the 'au naturale' look... but I've been googling welsh ds with pulled manes and they do look rather smart!
