Hello

I have a new 5 YO WB that arrived on Sunday

Has not really been turned out in the last 2 years with last owner however has gone out in a paddock a few hours a day by him self and these lumps have appeared ONLY on his neck and shoulder.

He is not bothered by them - they are not weepy. Wondering if they could be fly bites or do you think an allergy?

(I was half way through pulling his mane when I took these - please excuse!!)

could be fly bites but could also be an allergy to something. As he's new to you it may be worth contacting previous owners to find out if there is anything he has reacted to before. May be food related or even something in the grass.

Thanks Splike123! Im thinking fly bites - but there are not too many fly's around by me! Also thought food as put him on Fast Fibre and D & H Pasture mix thinking both would be a nice gentle introduction to new feeding regime as was previously just on nuts and hay.

Will drop them a message!

Could be an allergy agree change his food back and see, rain scald starts with lots of lumps under the skin but they are really painfull to touch so you would know if it was the start of that.

They look like the fly bites Fly gets, but they also look like the protein bumps on a horse I used to ride that had a sudden diet change...and they also look like an allergy on a horse of a friends that was allergic to maize which was in the diet.

It could be any number of things. I would call old owner and discuss feeding, even if you have him on the same feed...he could have been on supplements or given something else as well.

I would check diet first and go from there.

Thanks guys

Well I think sounds like flys and feed (which contains maize)

Maybe Ill speak to D and H and they can suggest a diet as all he was fed before was pony nuts and he needs to go on a bit more than that as is very lean and will shortly be coming into hard competition work (working towards this of course).

He is also out at grass for the first time in 2 years so a major change for him although am stabling him over night

Thanks for posts every one ;-)
