Urgent Help needed. I have a skewbald mare who had serious sunburn caused by photosensitisation 4 years ago. Since then she has been fine but 2 weeks ago I noticed sores/sunburn on her face and she was sweating profusely. We have put sun cream on and she is stabled during the day and only out at night. However, the sores are getting worse and she now has patches appearing on her shouler and legs. She is on steriods and her blood tests show her liver function is OK. Can anyone help.

a horse at my yard has a kydney infection which somehow resulted in him being massively sunburnt on his nose. I don't know the particulars I'm afraid so probably not much use.
I have heard that buttercups cause photosensitisation - is she in a field with lots of them?
I hope you manage to get to the bottom of this!

That is really interesing about the buttercups do you remember where you heard that I have problems with my mare with photosensitive dermatitus and my gelding is also showing signs of photosentisation and they are in a field full of buttercups.....

there is something on the buttercups that causes severe reactions to the sun when it sits on the skin.
hence horses with buttercup photosensitivity tend to get the reaction on the nose and lower pasterns rather than higher up the legs where there is also pink skin.
removing the buttercups will get rid of it, if thats the cause.
kidney and liver impairment can cause photosensitivity as they work to remove toxins from the horses blood.as they build up they react to sun light and cause this blistering rash.liver dysfunction can cause particularly bad photosensitvity
my mare got buttercup photosen about 5 years ago and ended up on IM antibiotics for 4 days and had to be kept in out the sun for a good week.never had it since(obviously not been out on buttercup fields though)her legs blew up like balloons and she was 9/10 lame in walk.
