I need to be more physically fit.

I ride 4-6 days a week and RIDE (normally sweaty when I finish), ned is too fit according to my instructor but yet I'm puffing after 15 mins of a lesson?!

Gave up smoking over 5 months ago (

), eat heathily etc so think I seriously need to fitten up- I get sloppy and careless when I'm tired and I can't afford that round an XC course!

What do you do to keep fit?

i think im going to start regularly swimming, i dont think running or anything like that wuld last with me because i hate it! or any other form of exercise come to think of it!!

I HATE running, don't understand how anyone could do it deliberately on purpose

Was wondering about doing an exercise DVD... easy to fit in with busy schedule? Swimming not so easy on the fit it in front, although I love swimming

what about doing some static stuff such as, as soon as you get out of bed do 10 sit ups, 10 press ups/ half press ups etc. and increase it over the weeks - means you get it over and done with in the morning and it really strengthens your back and stomach muscles etc.

Also a good one is when you go and do the horses, instead of walking backwards and forwards doing things, jog or run which means chores get done quicker and you get fitter!!!

also timing yourself mucking out and then try to beat your time - makes you much out efficiently and fast and really makes you sweat and puff afterwards and makes you fitter!!!!!

some good ideas hattikins!!
i know wot u mean about swimming, its is supposed to be very good exercise using lots of muscles and if u build it up its oprobably as effective as something like running!
fittting in wise im hoping to go after school as i cant rtide still yet as its too dark....maybe once/twice a week!

Hi - Cycling isn't a bad way of getting the old muscles in trim, especially if you stand out of the saddle up the hills. Found it improved my balance and co-ordination as well and gives you a taste for speed when going down hill - useful practice for the x country - especially if the brakes don't work . Found Swimming pretty useful as well .

Hi

I did so much stable work and so much training that competing (and being slim) for advancaced medium dressage in competition wasn't too bad at all! I think I should have done more jogging and things though!

I would think eventers and things ride a lot and that keeps them fit, also stable work plus I would think a lot of people try to go running once or more times a week.

Walking, even doing the stairs at work, will help build up your fitness levels!

Have fun!

i have an exersize bike at home so i try and do an hour in the evenings i also work on a yard all day and ride mouse for 40-60mins then go on and put my other 2 to bed at another yard at weekends i will try and do 1 1/2-2hours on the bike and go for a jog unless im competing

Thanks everyone- a few ideas I hadn't even thought of!

The jogging yard chores sound inspired, as does the skipping! Would also like to do the cycling but not until the nights get lighter so I can go outside

Well this has given me some ideas as I don't ride, as it is too dark and I don't have time to go swimming and cannot bare the thought of jogging in the rain but jogging around the yard and skipping appeals to me a lot, so thank you guys for helping me out aswell as lzt

i am a exercise addict!!!! I love to run, i used to compete long distance, i cycle and of course run. Would like to swim but i dont have the time. I was really happy with my fitness two years ago in summer, i was going to gym 4-5 times a week and riding apporx 3 times a day. I cannot remember the last recent time i went to the gym!

Running is good, and cyclying helps with tummy area and less boring, maybe. I also do a workout in my room for about 40 mins which is tough but feel great after, practice breathing really deep which will help you whilst riding to and help posture

agree with BB, skipping is REALLY good for you, why dont you try a yoga or pilates class, oh and those big core bals are great! My friend uses a workout dvd and loves it

A bit of a weird one, but I found swiss ball classes once a week really helped me towards the end of the eventing season, plus walking to and from work.

CCJ mucks out her own two horses, fills lots of haynets for others, turns horses out and in, checks the herd and surrounding fields when her Dad can't, then goes to work and mucks out 6 more, takes hacks out, leads beginners on hacks for miles, then comes home, rides two or three horses, skips out and finishes off.
Despite eating sweets/chocs/lots of bad things at times, she stays a size 10..
In summer she walks the XC courses three times at each event if possible, and is fit enough to ride.
(oh she occasionally swims too in summer)
I'm totally unfit but I walk the dog most days a couple of miles, and at events walk bl***y miles to and from tent/course/dressage arena.. By the end of October I am always a lot fitter!

I realised i was really unfit when i watched a x country video my OH is commentating and you see me come out the woods towards the camera and OH comments " Oh gosh Skye (my horse) must be tired listen to her puffing" upon watching the video it is very apparent it is me puffing!!
I skip for 10 minutes every other morning it doesnt sound like much but i can do it anywhere and it has really helped, also use the trampoline (belongs to YO daughter) is amazing how much hard work that is.

I need to get fit for the eventing season too. I went to the gym regularily last year and jeez did I feel the difference when I did a XC! Usually like half round Id get tired and have to fight to keep myself out of the saddle but when I was fit it was so easy. Wish I had my own gym......

Last winter i went to the gym a bit but got totally boared with that so didnt do much just my boys at home and once the season starts i didnt have much time to do anything but ride to keep fit!! So will just event this off my normal fitness
I muck out 4 in the morning - ride 2, turn out 5/6 then might ride another - finish work ride my boys muck them out, go back to work skip out 5 then home again to finish off my 2!!
