I have an ancient Tb gelding who has lost all his topline muscle and now has a very prominent point of croup. His lightweight no-fill turnout rug is unfortunately rubbing his point of croup now as it is the highest point and so creates a pressure point. It's not so bad with his thicker rugs as there is padding to protect him, but I use his lightweight rug a lot so i would like to get one for him that minimizes this rubbing. His current rug is a Premier Equine and it has lasted incredibly well, it must be almost ten years old and I am a big fan of their rugs but it is heavy, especially given that it is a no fill rug with no neck. I didn't really realise how heavy their rugs were until I picked up someone else's! Can anyone recommend a good quality but physically light turnout rug? Must be no fill, he has plenty of thicker rugs and liners but the no fill gets a lot of use. I suppose if I went for 600D instead of a higher denier it would be lighter in weight but I do need it to be waterproof and my experience with 6O0D rugs is not great. He is a substantial Tb in spite of his lack of topline, he has a broad chest and shoulders so nothing narrow in front. TIA.

I've found that Amigo and Gallop are really light. My Derby House ones are so heavy, I think it's the clip buckles at the front that weigh it down more. Not sure on the denier of them though.

I have a Saxon heavy weight on an elderly TB and it is very light. I expect that their no fill would be light too.

Shires are quite light too.

Maxima Equestrian turnouts are what we use and are pretty light considering they are 1200D (certainly lighter than PE). They have fully adjustable front fastenings so can cater for the broader horse. They are also reasonably priced and have a sale on at the moment.

I know people sometimes sew foam padding into the lining to stop wither rugs, and do know whether that is an option for bony croups as well?

Thanks for the Maxima recommendation and the foam padding suggestion, that's a really good idea!

I am trying to replace my old girl's rugs with Rambo rugs. The wug style is especially good for her and they are very light compared to other makes or even Amigo which is also made by Horseware.

My old tbs have Amingo hero 900 denier rugs which are 50g fill but very light and I find fit them well. They are also pale blue colour which I prefer for summer rather than dark colours.
