Going to collect 'Fly' (new horse) tomorrow. Very excited, haven't slept all week. Have heard that weather is going to be rainly for a few days. He will have a 3.5 hour journey home and I was hoping to turn him out when we got back to have a roll and stretch before putting him in for night. (At present in at night out by day - fully clipped). Will have to put him straight in stable if raining - my paddocks won't take it. Will lead him out/turn out Friday (depending on weather) and ride out gently on Saturday. Do you think that is too soon to ride?

I guess I will have to play it by ear. Hopefully weather will be good enough to turn him out for 4/5 hours a day for a week. I have 3 others, would be intereseted in how other people integrate a newcomer. Do you do it one by one? Must admit I turned Blue straight out with my other two with no probs, but a bit wary now the heard is so established.

I think it depends on the horse - if he seems settled, then i'd ride him earlier than a week. If not, leave it a bit. I always take mine on walks inhand, so they get used to their surroundings before i ride.

We have 2 paddocks next to each other, so when a new horse moves on, they go on their own next door to the group they'll be going in with. They stay there for 5-7 days, then they go in with the group. Never had any probs with this.

In 2000 a new horse moved on and i just put my gelding straight in with him. The new horse cornered Murph and battered him. Took chunks out all over him and shattered the slint bone in his right hind leg. He pulled through, but we're super paranoid about new horses now!!!

Good luck though! Hope he enjoys his new home! X

Well I usually ride the day they arrive, or the one after - I start as I mean to go on

As for turning out with others - absolutely NOT until a full worming prog has been completed.

i gave my lad 1 week full rest when moved and then the following week, walking out and lunging, but we did move so he could live out 24 7

If my prospective new horse passes the vet, I'll be riding as soon as poss!! It's been WAY too long, & hacking out a geriatric mare doesn't really count as riding.

Prosp new horse is sensible tho - might be diff if he was scatty. Altho Cat was scatty & I had a saddle on him before the dealer was hardly off the yard! Far too excited to wait.
