Pickles blood test came back not so good he has incredibly low white blood cell count, extremely low if you take in the fact he has been on a supplement to boost this all week. He now has to have 3 weeks paddock rest (he has had 2 weeks off prior to this) and has to have medication to boost his immune system

My poor man , It has made me realise how lucky I am though that my YO gives me horses to ride, and my friends/sister allow me to ride there horses. Poor pickley looks like I have some persuading to do with other liveries if I can do the yard show next week.
 
He's been on an iron supplement right? As this wont help with the white cell count.

Sounds like immune boosters are a good idea, are they going to do further tests to try and find out the cause?

yep, vet asked that, his bed is as wet as it always is and he is weeing fine
 
Ah that's good then. Well I hope they find out what is wrong with him - thankfully it wasn't what I was thinking of.

yes vet asked lots fo questions to distinguish what it was, they think its where he hasnt fully recovered from a virus he had in the past
 
Aw poor guy. Hope he is back to his old self soon.

Hey, try ( if vet hasnt suggested anything else) Vi-Sorbin, its a B vit tonic. Friends pony has had severe liver failure/damage in the past due to ragwort, and he gets low white counts every year when his coat changes and its the only thing that vets said would work. Have also used it alot on horses that didnt pick on on Pink Powder etc.
Give him pats and scratches! (am sourcing carrots!!)
 
poor pickles, i have heard of this before, one of the horses on my yard had low white blood cells. he got better within a couple of weeks after rest and some medication (cant remember what it was), so im sure pickle will be feeling his normal self soon!!
 
Poor chap - hopefully the tough clydie side will pick him up.

My TB Miss Delia had something like this - I thought we had finally clicked jumping - she was coming in beautifully calm and really going well - we were doing up to 4'. Then it clicked that she was just too quiet and she had started to drop weight more than her normal winter drop off.

Blood test showed the opposite - low red, high white cells - she had a virus.

Had to have a couple of months off, plenty of food given in 5 feeds a day, I gave her Red Cell and lots of TLC and arranged a few massages and physio sessions - she lost a lot of weight and muscle. Took a good 6 months before she picked up but within 8 months was back to her old self. Delia was 18 at the time and a delicate sort - the pony who gave it to her was back to normal within 3 months and never lost any weight.

One thing that she was left with was a permanet heart mumur - down to me riding when she had it - you can imagine how bad I felt but the vet said not to blame myself as I could not have know in the early stages. Never bothered her and she is still alive at 27.

Hopefully Pickles will be back to normal within a few months - finally Feedmark do a good immune system booster - I used this on Cairo who due to chemo had a very bad time with his immune system - really picked him up and he now does not seem to suffer with all the problems he used to have.
 
Sorry to hear about your horse. My horse had a low white cell count and a reversed lymphocyte: neutrophil ratio thought to be the result of her not recovering from a virus. The blood tests were the same 6 months later. I was told to give her a year off but ended up riding her again after another 6 months because she was blasting around the field and very much back to her usual self. I started riding her once a week in walk and built this up very slowly. I didn't compete her for a year because she get a bit stressed in the box which I didn't think would help. Two other horses with the same 'diagnosis' were ridden lightly until they 'recovered'.
