Both please - oh forgot to add if you hadnt read my original post that we went to see her on Saturday and she has gone a mousey colour on her legs and belly although her foal coat hasnt come out yet?

Oh and my mare is going to be put to the stallion so preferably a prefix or part of the posh name that could be used on the foal my mare has if that makes sense.

The black in my sig went beige and ened up blue black. Blacks do go a dodge colour. She might not actually go black again until she goes into her second summer.

Only semi precious stone I can think of is Jet.

YorksG - I actually wanted a spotted, and I have been told that the mare had a solid coloured colt last year that has now spotted out over the winter....but I have no idea of genetics so thats why I was asking, my dream would be for her to stay black and have a spotted blanket. Do you know a lot about the Capitol stud? I would love to know more pm me if you wish. Thanks

I would suggest that the first port of call is the BAps web site, they have a section on genetics, they also have a forum. but the last time I visited the site the forum had been down for quite some time.

Thanks for that - yes the forum is still down but did some research and have e-mailed the stud where Capitall Hadrian was bred his sire is Capitall Hefin, maybe they can help shed some light on it.

There is a chapter on colour genetics in 'genetics of the horses', The reason it is so complicated is they have a base coat colour (which from memory is either black, chestnut or white) and then everything else, eel stripes roans bays coloureds spots etc are controlled by dozens of mediator genes which in combination produce all the colours and coat patterns. There is also something called the progressive greying gene, mine was born like yours, was a very dark blue roan when I bought him as 4yo, has got lighter and lighter with a lovely dappled stage at 6/7 and is now completely flea bitten grey no black anywhere aged 18. So I'm going to guess she'll be grey.

Thanks for all your replies, I really dont mind what colour she ends up, I have had greys all of my life and love them. My old boy was chestnut when he was born, turned dapple grey with black points, mane & tail now at 17 is pure white, and my mare an Irish draft is of unknown age...? although her passport says 8 she is late teens at least and is still slightly dappled and has some dark in her mane and tail...It will be very interesting to find out if she does spot out or not, more than likely not as she doesnt seem to have any characteristics, but her full brother who was born last year emerged spotty after being rugged up all winter!

I'm assuming Dad is spotted and Mum is clearly black so unless I'm completely mistaken the foal cannot have the greying gene, greys must have at least one grey parent. Is Hadrian homozygous for spots (i.e. a fewspot)? If not she could well be black like Mum but as her brother has spotted out she may do as well. Appaloosa genetics is sooo confusing and I'm no expert at all but the spotty ones I've had or known have changed colour, often dramatically, until they are about 7!

Hadrian is a loud leopard Im afraid, lives in a herd with most of his mares unless they are visiting, and most of the mares are few spot apart from 2, Topaz which is my fillies dam and another bay mare who has produced a stunning nr leopard colt who will probably end up full leopard, most of the other foals are white and have started spotting, their is another filly with a lacy blanket and a full bay so who knows it was just a bit of fun really as I am intrigued by spotties....I will keep you posted if you are interested.

Oooh yes please (to updates) it will be fascinating to watch her grow up. Being completely nosey, is Hadrian, Les Edwards stallion? I had a mare from him many years ago.
