My horse came in tonight with this on her chest. Its movable and hanging down like an udder?! It feels hard inside. Its not bothering her and not sore to touch. She had penicilin injections in her chest a week ago as she had a cough which turned out to be an allergy. you can still see the marks where she had them as she does tend to be quite sensitive to things like injestions and insect bites. However this doesnt look like a normal insect bite... So she has been on piriton for 3 days (10 twice a day) any ideas????

Looks like a martingale (or draw reins or other gadget) sore/pinch to me. When the strap betwen the legs is left too much to one side through tightening the girth it can rub one leg. Sometimes actually raw, and it can lame the horse.
It always comes back right after a day or two.

Even if it was from the penicillin (which it can be also, though it was a week ago so unlikely) there's absolutely nothing to worry about and it will come right, either way :)

Thanks for you reply. She doesnt wear any gadgets or ill fitting tack so that can definatly be ruled out. Many others have commented that it may be fluid draining down from an insect bite/injection which was my original thought ;)

Hey.
Yes could be fluid from injections or insect bite. But may be just some thing simple like a fatty deposit.
If it is not hurting her and she is good in her self massage it a few times a day to help it disperse faster.

thanks :) hmmmm defo not a fatty deposit as it has developed overnight.

Fair enough. Eveyone agrees it'll go away on its own though, and that it's nothing to worry about :)

My boy had nearly exactly the same last year and it went nearly as quickly as it came. I was told it was a bite, not sure whether it was an insect or the horses mucking around. I wouldn't worry, just keep an eye on it. I would add a photo but I'm on my phone.

My mare had this last year, but it was bigger. There was no heat or tenderness. Vet checked it as was already at the yard and said probably a bite and as lowest point on chest, fluid has pooled. It went down quickly within a week. I guess your may be related to the injection site. Nothing worry about!

MY horse had one like this at the start of the week. Had the vet look when she was up taking some blood and she thought it was a insect bite and would go away in a few days and right enough you wouldnt even know this morning it had been there.

check that in the middle of lump there isnt a tick - my mare had exactly the same thing and after moment of panik examined it and a flippin tick was in the middle - removed the tick and it went down in a few days.

it was probably a swelling on the horses chest from the injections she had, (maybe some blood leaked under her skin when they were done,) and gravity makes them move to the lowest point and hang like this. Massage it gently and it will soften and start to go away. Should go in a day or 2, dont worry about it, just fluid taking gravity's course!

This always happens to my boy when injected in the chest although not as bad now as the first time. I will post the first reaction but bear in mind it's rare 'cos don't want you to think OMG! (not sure how to add another on at the same time?)

And all because of times like this, all over his body! I swear by fly free now! It seems to keep him pretty clear and by process of elimination, I just have to be careful with any products and certain feeds!

it looks like a haematoma to me or a bite, give it a gentle massage for a few days, it should dissapear.

my little foaly had one at a week old! size of a tennis ball, very unsightly but he must have piddled mummy right off :D all gone now :D

my horse has had 1 of these for a week have had the vet out and he doesnt know what it is! its exactly like yours isnt bothering her and theres no head for it to be an insect bite. Vet has given me stuff to put on it an if it hasnt gone away by tuesday he wants to do a scan. im reluctant to do it merely cause this mare has cost me a fortune and if its nothing to worry about an will go away in time id rather avoid more costs.

My mare had this last year and it was a fly bite after about 24hrs it developed a head, at the moment she has one on her mammary gland, Aloe Vera gel is very good for them.

I got another vet out on tuesday and she said it was a weep from the injection have to wash it with hot water then cold then hot an then cold an 2 anti-inflammatory a day for 5 days! Lump has gone down considerably and I'm only on day 3 now!

Yep, had one of those on my mare's chest a few years ago. Came up during the day and stayed for weeks. It looked just like a dogs scrotum, I was so embarrassed! I am certain it was caused by a fly bite although I never found one above it. Eventually I decided to try homeopathic Apis Mel 30c which gives brilliant results for bites and stings and it disappeared completely in 2 days.
