I would be really greatful for any of your thoughts on this ... My horse has an odd ridge on her side and I have never seen anything quite like it perviously and I wondered what you folks thought it might be?

She has had this for a few months and i have gradually been worrying about it more and more ...

some history of horse ... mare, 8yrs old, in regular work - ridden about an hour most days, generally appears well, is willing to work, Had mastitus in one teat in the spring which caused a numebr of odd swealings in her under belley (vet said these were part of the same problem and not a cause for concern), has a locking stifle - not very bad, on both sides. Horse is a good doer.

The ridge is symertrical exactly on both sides.

Things i can think of include

1. The odd fat deposits one gets with cushings or IM symdrome (but its very flat for that, mare does have a slightly cresty neck though so perhaps I should get vet to check for that?
2. SOme kinf of Oedema associated with the mastitus - but I have never seen this over the back - always under the belly.
3. SOme odd musculature development...??

Any ideas?

many thanks

I would say its a fat pad. Dependent on age and condition maybe a blood test for cushings and ems would be a good idea

Hmmm, that is an odd one, it's like a heave line in the wrong place. I would guess that it's muscular in some way - maybe you could try sending the pictures to a physio to see what they think.

Thanks all. I think I will get her checked for EMS etc just in case - she is probably a little over weight and I was thinking about her chubby neck last time I was plaiting up. She does seem to be an excessively good doer despite appearing in good health now it would help me manage her to get it checked so thanks for your input all
