Was seized as a cruelty case as him and his mother was in a small pen all winter with no feed ha or water and it was just rocks so not even a little grass to nibble. The usual people that collect the seizures had crashed her 4WD so we were asked to help and use ours so they could take them out pof there. we took them but the mare was heavily in foal and we didn't have facilities or experience with mares foaling so she was moved to another yard and foaly stayed with us. My mare adopted him. Couldnt get anywhere near him and it was all up in the air about the seizure for ages and eventually they were awarded back to the owner. We fought it and were allowed buy him from the owner so he wouldn't have to go back. His mother was awarded back though and there are now 4 horses in the pen and another baby foal sso its happening all over again. Its so sad. His feet were a complete mess as well and he could barely walk when he came to us. He is sstill really stiff behind but you never know he might come right. Doesn't matter to us as we just wanted to give him a chance.
Two weeks ago you couldn't get within 20 feet of him. My friend has been working with him and he is coming on a treat. She is brilliant.
I love being home in Ireland but when it comes to animal welfare it is appauling.
ETS. No he wassn't taken from a mountain. The pen was surrounded by good grazing.
It makes me so angry that people are so morally wrong! I wonder how they would feel if we tied them in the middle of macdonalds for weeks with no access to food but can smell it and taste it only inches away!
No surely it's rewarding appauling bad behaviour with money? I would definitely not give the person who let a foal get in that state my hard earned cash for them to go buy more horse's to put through hell. I just see it as fuelling the problem. what I would do is another matter and may well not be within the law.
we gave him 100 euro so the foal would not have to go back. Yes and I really don't think I need to defend that. He would have been a trotter and is a yearling so would have been starting his "training" if he was returned. What would you have done?
ETS this foal and mare were seized by a recognised welfare orgaisation in the presence of the police and a vet and they still were awarded back. The owners are a very well know criminal family and it was deemed by the police and the vet involved that the fall out in crossing them was not worth it.

100 euro would buy another horse to treat like sh!t, we clearly won't see eye to eye on this.
I went to visit a horse for sale that was terribly underweight, bad feet and probably laminitic. She was being charged (as best she could) round a field and jumped, she looked suicidal. I didn't give them the £300 they wanted for her, I walked away. I called the ILPH and left them to deal with it.
Had the horse not been removed I'd have went back in the night, cut the chain to the field and taken the horse to a friends yard to recuperiate then sold her on to somewhere out with the region.
I would never have given the man money, I wouldn't have p!ssed on him if he were on fire.
However in your hypothetical situation did you ever think about the prospect of every yard in the area being broken into and horses slashed because of your actions?
Sometimes the best way of dealing with something it to think about the consequences and have things done the legal way and not go in all guns blazing on a matter of principle.
ETS yes I am getting p1ssy with you as you are making me defend saving the foal. I had no other option and I shouldn't be critised or have to defend it. this was a light hearted post to show how he looks now and to start a progress line for his recovery.
I think regardless of wether or not this foal was paid for, the pits of an owner would either continue to inflict cruelty on to this horse or replace with an other .
IMO Moocow has just ensured a happy ending for this lucky horse, wether or not you agree with how this came about isn't the point of the post.
Some people can walk away from a cruelty case, and some people can't, I couldn't, but each to their own.
I hope the little man continues to improve and good luck.
Well thank you for the support. Now he trusts humans he is a little darling. I have just put 1000 euro into him so far (and I am a student!) so its certainly not the cheap option but he is worth it to see his little face.
I will post regular pics of him so you can have a look at his progress. Things should move faster now that we can handle him and hopefully there will be some good grass for the little man soon. He is now able to eat feed as well so he should be well on the way to recovery.
Thats lovely moocow, I am sure you will be dually rewarded.
Expensive foal eh!! There should be more people like you, too many just turn the other cheek!

Sorry but you would advocate criminal damage and theft? Yes the foal has been mistreated but the OP either had to pay for him and remove him from the conditions he was in or leave him for the man to carry on mistreating if he was allowed to remain. Your idea is a non-option.
I would have bought him lol but i am soft i couldn't have watched him go back cause by the time these rescue places got to him it would prob be too late. Also don't think stealing a horse is a good idea and selling it on TBH surely thats theft?!
I agree "in prinicpal" to not funding cruelty but this type of person takes revenge very easily so when possible it is best not to cross them. I also think the OP has acted morally, she stayed within the law and the pony is safe and cannot be taken away again.
There will always be cruelty - sometimes we can help, sometimes we can't. Sad but a fact of life.
Thanks papafrita. Although he looks awful, we have had him three months and to us, he has come on so much. He can now move. When we got him he just stood in obvious pain in the field. I am really curious to see what he becomes as well. His mum was lovely bless her but she has had to go back.
i wish there were better laws over here protecting them.
Well done you for rescuing him and giving him the chance of a good life. I'm sure the tlc and attention he is now getting will turn him into a lovely boy - and as he is young he powers of recovery may surprise you!
Unfortunately cruelty exists and the relevant authorities are in place to try and combat that. They may not always do the best of jobs but at least you can be safe in the knowledge that you've done your part and secured a great future for this lovely little chap.
Can't save them all and not sure how breaking the law helps the situation - as heartbreaking as it may be. The punishments for any sort of animal neglect/cruelty need to be far, far harsher imo never mind what the likes of you and I would like to do to the bas****s
Have done so Tnavas. Basically have been told that unless they are dead, nothing will be done. the police will not intervene because of the owners involved. They believe a few dead horses is better than the wrath of these people. The dept of agric. were supposed to be inspecting the mare when she went back but have not done so. When the rescue organisation contacted them to ask why they were told they only have one inspector and its only a horse afterall.
