surely to ilegally remove a horse from a field, bring it back to health and then sell it on would be worse than just paying for it

Poor lad looks a sweetie.I would have done same as you that way above board and your not constantly looking over your shoulder.

id keep an eye on the mare and other stock if i were you...
the law wont allow a keeping ban on the 1st conviction but it can on the second!!its really sad that cruelty has to occur before the investigate but hopefully Gormleys new welfare law will help sort some of these sort of cases out!!
oh and if the gaurds and dept of ag dont help it might be worth going to some papers
the sunday world mite be a rag but if there a well known criminal family they might be intreasted then the dept will have to intervene!

all due respect princess sparkle but your solution about stealing the horse away in the night smacks of classic pony book fiction! Not a practical solution in the real world!
I would have done exactly what the OP did in the circumstances

100 euro would buy another horse to treat like sh!t, we clearly won't see eye to eye on this.

I went to visit a horse for sale that was terribly underweight, bad feet and probably laminitic. She was being charged (as best she could) round a field and jumped, she looked suicidal. I didn't give them the £300 they wanted for her, I walked away. I called the ILPH and left them to deal with it.

Had the horse not been removed I'd have went back in the night, cut the chain to the field and taken the horse to a friends yard to recuperiate then sold her on to somewhere out with the region.

I would never have given the man money, I wouldn't have p!ssed on him if he were on fire.

What choice was there? It's not about rewarding the b*****, but about giving the foal a chance.

Don't have a go at someone for trying to do the right thing by the foal. We need to raise awareness of the issue and try to change the law, rather than having a go at individuals. I can see where you are coming from though, but I would have done the same rather than have the foal taken back. Can't believe the mother was returned, that's appalling...

the mother was returned because thats the law in ireland.horses are just property here...and they still belong to their owner even if they are crappy ppl with cruelty convictions
hell its actually realy hard to get a conviction over here cos the owner is given loads of warnings and chances to pull their act toghether before they can push for a prosecution ..it is appalling but the dept has its hands tied buy laws that are outdated....
id definately have done what moocow did in the same circumstances!at least now 1 of the ponies has been saved from that life....and if you tried to steal a horse from a family like that they would make your life hell and would probly get the horse back from where you hid it!
 
OP don't listen to PS, she was obviously dropped on her head too much as a child- well done for saving the ponio and here's hoping he continues to improve.
 
Thanks Aru. thats exactly the position. The mare and foal were in my field with my mare and donk. if they spotted them, they would have cut the chain and taken him and god knows what they would have done to my animals. Really interesting what you say about the second conviction. Bascially what happened was though that the owner turned up with a solicitor saying they were illegally seized. the vet that inspected suddenly said there was a conflict of interest and pulled out and the police claimed that there were not present and never said they would go ahead with the seizure (which was not the case we were there with them and spoke to them!!!) so the animals were award back to him. the mare is not in the pen anymore. she has disappeared. she was so sweet though. I feel terrible about her but he would not give her up. there was nothing i could do for her.

well moocow, i am all with you.

no matter where you are in life there will always be people bad using animals. the world isnt ideal, bad things happen all the time, and we'll never stop half of it .

If 100euros gave the foal a better life, then so be it. i would rather give money to a bad person, to give an animal a better life than p!ss the money down the drain of clothes and a night out in town for no a hangover and dodgy fotos on bebo the next day, than lie in bed at night wondering if the poor wee bugger is still alive or not, or getting trashed to bits

the world isnt a easy place, or fair, but you just have to take what comes your way

moocow is happy, the foal is happy, the man is happy. he sure as hell shouldnt be, but thats the problem with cruelty cases - the owners seem to get the horses back, or get new ones. the 100euros didnt fund another horse because people like that would of went and got more horses somehow anyway
 
I like to think that if we do come back in the next life maybe the roles will be reversed and he will experience some of the apin he has inflected on animals. It wont be my boy though as he doesn't have a bad bone in his little skinny body.

Looking forward to posting pictures of him at the end of the summer looking all smart, groomed and de loused!!!
 
its always that sort of folk that get off with it bad using animals! i have saw some sights!

moocow, well done you for rescuing the little fellow.
It's awful that you've had to line the pockets of someone so evil to get Buster to a safe place, but it's a hell of a lot more awful that the powers that be don't have more clout to stop people like that from mistreating animals this way.
I'm looking forward to seeing Buster's progress to a big, strong boy with lots of love in his life! x
