He is a photo of my ex-racer i'm currently re-schooling. He's a fab jumper, v. careful and didn't touch a single one. His flatwork his also improving greatly!

(Ignore me though! lol I know i'm sat waaayyy too far forward!!

Right well here goes....

Not a very clear picture but my mum does not confess to know how to work my camera! lol I know my stirrups are short! This was inbetween jumping

Hiya, he seems a nice type (although a bit grumpy!!) Moving your hands a little further forward may help him learn to stretch over a fence, although I appreciate it is early days
smile.gif

wow! People on here don't mince their words do they??

For what its worth, he finished racing because he didn't like jumping anymore, so its all about building his confidence. I've never really done much of this so we're both learning together. Also, if I was going to put pictures up of us actually going over the jump you'd see he does stretch out infront.

Thanks for your comments but jeez, way to knock a girl down

Welcome to the forum....

If you want constructive criticism and advice...you have come to the right place.....you will be given help from some really knowledgable people....

If you want generalised fluffiness, then I'm afraid you'll be dissapointed.

My jumping is crap.....so nothing from me about that, but don't take it heart...stick around
grin.gif

If you put pictures on a public forum the you have to expect the public to comment from what they can see, I was not trying to put your or your horse down, but he does look uncomfortable, have you had the physio to him, maybe he jarred himself jumping previously or something, he definitly is not stretching out over that picture and looks like he is backing off if anything, he may enjoy jumping, he may just be in pain somewhere, thoroughbreds are very sensitive, he may be trying to tell you something.

Hey my reply wasnt a negative one, I was waiting for you to ask what so I could say:-

.... the look of concentration!

He's just jumping like a typical ex racer, I'm sure with plenty of flat work, pole work, then in time increasing the height, he'll grow in confidence once he understands what its all about, he'll have hell of jump on him, crack on, have fun and take things slowly
smile.gif

Oh god know, not looking for fluffiness as you put it. Don't get me wrong, I know i'm crap and he's learning.

Thankyou for your kind words though, you seem like a lovely person

I guess i'm just a more of a look to the positives kinda person than straight to, and only, the negatives.

Hello !

I have got ex racers (they are a bit of a hobby/addiction)

I would say that is not the most flattering photo for cc!

He is obviously bold, but as you say, if he didnt like jumping then I would not be jumping him if I were you. Racehorses tend to leave raciing becasue they are stale and I tend to find if they have a workload they are not happy with they remain stale.

Have you considered hacking, schooling, and perhaps doing some cross country/hunter trials either schooling or competitively? Or even hunting?

Just an idea - becasue he doesnt look that comfortable in that particular picture.

He looks as though he jumps like a little chap I was riding the other year, he's quite under the fence, and jumping quite upright. The little horse I rode used to struggle to get his landing gear out in front after the fence too but it sounds like your chap doesn't have this issue.

I'd be inclined to pull your ground line pole out a little, or build a nice inviting little spread, one with a small cross infront of a straight bar to encourange him to take off a little earlier and make a nicer shape. Try some grid work too, and try to get the distances just long enough to make him stretch and keep your leg on so that he doesn't chip a little one in.

I'm sure as his confidence comes along and his strength on the flat increases his jumping will come along nicely.

For your position, try to think about pushing your bum out backwards rather than lifting it up out of the saddle. Think about squatting to go to the toilet without sitting on the seat, and think about trying to get your bum and your hands as far from each other as possible, so hands forward and bum backwards!

Hope that is useful!

I seem to have jumped a bit ahead myself I see. I apologise if my reaction was unfounded
smile.gif
I guess some replies just read a bit harsher than they were intended

And yes, hopefully as he gets more confident we shall progress. Although obviously its more me that needs to learn also! I shall definately be taking it slowly. He still thinks he's in training at the mo also......as my family trained him so he thinks he's geering up to go again! lol bless him
and yes.........he is a very grumpy old man, in the stable and out.........quirky i say

Sorry just noticed that your bottom pole is out a bit on the barrels, so clearly I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs - sorry!

I'd go for wider not higher for now though and work towards more technical challenges rather than bigger fences, especially if he lacks confidence. Maybe try some courses or competitions too.

He's lovely
grin.gif

In the first he looks likes really concentrating on not touching that obviously horrible, nasty pole
grin.gif

Don't put yourself down about your jumping. At least your not hauling on his mouth. I'd have hit the deck before even getting as far as the jump or if for some miracle i did get over I'd hit the deck immediately after we landed.

He looks like he has alot of potential...My previous ex racer was amazing
grin.gif
..wasnt very good at anything at the start but il bet you'l find he's a fast learner and willing to please..he looks like he has a nice pop in him by the first pic, perhaps it was just an awkward jump and you caught it on camera lol, im not goin to throw all that pain milarci at you, because im sure you would know if he was in pain and all that lol!
tongue.gif
laugh.gif
.... Good luck, i bet he'l come lovely for you, mine did and was amazing!!! Now starting on another ex-racer, proving to have exactly the same qualities
wink.gif

If being a grumpy old fart means he's in pain, then i'm surprised my grandad can even walk!
grin.gif
lol

No, thankyou for your concern, but he's always been grumpy! Its just him......he was worse when he was in training and racefit. But they are worse when they're fitter aren't they!
Oh and upon finishing racing he had a thorough examination at Langford (his owner liked to go the whole hog
