Hi guys,

How do you all think my 3 year old welsh section D is looking coming into winter? He is currently unbroken still so lacks muscle definition which I am aware of. He lives out on good grazing, will have adlib haylage by middle of this month and fed on top spec cool condition cubes with stud balancer and alfalfa.

I've had someone come to me and say she and a couple other people think he needs more weight on and should be being rugged both day and night to stop him getting cold and dropping weight....
But I feel youngsters shouldn't be kept fat...and so just wanted a broad range of opinion if poss :)

Looks right for time of year and a very handsome lad. May I, with the greatest of respect, make a suggestion about the fencing he is stood by. It is an accident waiting to happen, young horses love sticking their feet where they should not and that type of fencing would allow feet to get trapped.

he looks good to me! is 20 degrees out there and about 13 degrees tonight, he defo doesn't need a rug! all of mine are naked still, my 3yr old and my 28yr old clipped mare! its due to go down to 4 degrees on wed and thur night where I live so they will have light weights on at night! but your boy is hardy, you don't want to turn him into a wimp that needs massive rugs all year round!

Thank you all - I wouldn't want him to lose any weight either but just didn't know if I was being blinkered in thinking he doesn't need to be any chunkier!!

No offence taken :) It wouldn't be my choice either - but it is the land owner who makes that decision re fences and I have no say in it :/

If anything, I'd say he was a tad porky - nothing awful, just very well done for a three year old. DEFINITELY doesn't need extra feeding, rugging or other wise indulging :-)

He looks absolutely fine going into winter, definately wouldn't want anymore weight on him.
My SecD is 4 now and looked pretty much the same weight wise as yours this time last year. Trouble is folk are so used to seeing overweight cobs that it becomes the norm so anything thats holding a healthy weight is seen as being too lean. Mine doesn't even own a rug and he winters really well, although he hasn't got the long coat my Sec A's have, his coat is extremely dense.

Thanks all I just wanted to check it wasn't just me thinking he looks fine if he doesn't!!

AA - Landowner wont allow any alterations so I'm just lucky mine are sensible!
