Some of you may remember that we lost our lovely little rescue Spike at the start of July.

Well we have finally got our new Rescue girl. Her name is Ava, she is around a year old and was found wandering the streets of Spain covered in fleas and ticks. She was cleaned up and blood tested/vaccinated and then transported here (and yes we have already had the debate about whether we should be rehoming dogs from abroad in the UK so prefer not to have that conversation here)

We got her on Tuesday. She was very wary at first, but has very quickly started to settle in and gain confidence. She is very gentle but does like to have a mad 5 minutes around the garden. She has no recall whatsoever at the moment but we will start working on that in the coming weeks so she will have to stay on the lead for the foreseeable. She has already learned sit and lie so cottons on quickly.

She seems to have an absolute fascination with chasing birds and although the cat is keeping his distance she has not shown any sign of wanting to chase him, just to play with him (fingers crossed and touch wood this continues).

Meet Ava

Awwww she's lovely, just my type of dog, a scruffy terrier type!!

I hope she has a long and happy and life with you after her not so nice start in life.

In terms of breeding I think she is a real mix. The rescue seemed to think she has some Pyrenean shepherd dog in her which makes sense as she has a short bob type tail which seems to be natural and the colouring and hair are right. She might also have some galgo as she looks slightly lurcher like in her body and gangly legs. She also has a strong pointing instinct so not sure where that comes from.

She's been super so far, although she did chew up her bed when left alone for a couple of hours yesterday. However I just don't think she is used to being left alone so we need to work on that - I did leave her a kong stuffed with treats, a rope bone and the radio to entertain her but leaving her so soon was not ideal - just unavoidable.

She has also taken to stealing socks from the drying rack in the conservatory but I swapped her for an old stuffed rabbit this morning and she seemed happy enough. I just need to get her some soft toys designed for dogs with nothing she can swallow! She also attempted to get in the cats bed last night much to our entertainment as it is far too small for her. She had to settle just for lying across it.
