Don't know much about short base 4x4's but we tried a freelander (yes i know they are pants!) Now we have a Subaru legacy Outback 2.5 It is brilliants and a towing machine! Whats even better though is that if you have to use it as a towing vehicle and a work/shopping/dog walking/family car it will do it all! It's so quiet and a beautifully nippy 30mpg and if you buy one that was born in 2001 or earlier you don't have to pay the higher tax rate BRILLIANT!!!!!
Sorry I know this not an answer to your question but I thought I would menion that a 2.8 TD SWB Pajero are brilliant little work horses, great for towing, very reliable, because there SWB there good for doing lots of reversing etc.
Plus you can pick them up really cheep now, very good 4x4's.
this is a shogun SWB http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www...103-133-146-236,N-240-4294967058-4294967258/advert.action?R=200911330356320&distance=71&postcode=rg20+6pj&channel=CARS&make=MITSUBISHI&model=SHOGUN&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=1991&vehicleRegLetter=
My Landy has a towing capacity of 3.5t.It is £185 a year to tax.You can get the model with windows in the back.Mine has bench seats but you can get them with proper fold down seats. It tows my 511 like it is not there.
I have a mitsubushi shogun 4work van. It tows an ifor williams 505 and 2 heavy 16hh no problems. Heavy on diesel tho. We used to have a Landrover defender 90 which was brilliant at towing, and are looking at getting a defender 110 to replace the shogun, my husband is a landrover fan. They are basic inside but are great at towing.
I'm eventually before next winter going to get a Daihatsu Fourtrak - a lot of them are classed as LWB but they're quite short really. I wouldn't feel happy driving a LWB Shogun or Defender (bit of a step up from a VW Polo!) but the Fourtrak looks manageable. I hear they're known for their towing abilities - apparently the 2.8 TDX will 'play' with an average two horse trailer.

Fourtracks are excellent towcars, with a capacity of 3500kg you will have more than enough power/weight to tow a horse trailer!! I am on my 3rd fourtrack now, am a great fan of them, however they are not a "ladies" drive!!! If you are looking for luxury and comfort a fourtrack is not for you, they drive like tanks LOL!! But all in all they are fantastic towcars and extremley capable off road machines too......i could of sold mine 3 times over last sunday when the four wheel drive club were in the area doing their stuff!! had one guy offer there and then and two numbers under the wipers!!
My 3.1TD Vauxhall Monteray (Isuzu Trooper) is a brilliant towing vehicle and has a 3.1tonne towing capacity. I've had her for 10 years and she is the most reliable vehicle ever. Her name is Ruby lol
I dont have a pic but I have a short wheeled based Vauxhall frontera, it tows my ifw505 and a 15.1 easy enough but its cost a fortune to keep going, they are not reliable, so dont buy one!
I have an auto N reg Isuzu Trooper 3.1 short wheel-base. Not exactly sure of towing capacity but it would pull an IW505 + 2 horses fine and probably fine with a IW510 too.
It is a fantastic car, very tough but easy to drive. OH wants me to upgrade to a newer car but agrees with me that my old one is just the best and I will keep it until it dies - fingers crossed never, my favourite car I've ever owned.
She is called The Cabernero - don't know where that name came from
