I have recently bought a 'smoky black' Section D and we are in the process of breaking at the moment, and so I'm starting to think about 'proper' saddle, but not sure what colour would be best to go for? I really prefer black tack on black horse, but I will ideally be looking to do workers classes with her, and so I'm looking for a Working Hunter saddle.

I know there is an each to their own opinion on this, but I want to look smart in the ring and I don't want to fork out an arm and a leg for the 'wrong' colour...!

Does any body have any pictures of their horses or opinions on this?

Ooh, smoky black, LOVELY.
Our almost-but-not-quite black (very very dark seal bay) TB has darkest brown tack that's just a little lighter in colour than he is himself.
It hasn't come up very well in this photo though but the bridle is a dark brown aviemore one if you know what that looks like...

Why are people so against black tack? (genuine question, not having a dig - I just don't feel emotional either way.) I have my dapple grey in black tack cos I think brown tack would clash a bit with the blue tones in her coat. I like brown tack and know it is more 'correct' for showing etc so she might get brown tack when she's greyed out a bit more, but that depends on how much I decide I want to show... if not I don't feel like it matters all that much.

OP - I do think black horses look nice in the right brown tack and if you are showing I'd definitely go for brown.

I like it on white horses but everything else it just looks off IMHO. Brown tack on my 'white' pony just highlights all the muddy stains so I go with black to minimise the dirty-beige look xD

ditto if you think you might ever go near even a local show ring brown is the way to go, and I much prefer it. Often holds it's colour better too.

Perhaps you could try very dark brown tack.
I ended up with a black saddle because it was the right fit at the right price. But I love nice brown tack that has that really deep sheen that black leather never has.

I have a beautiful very old stubben that's a lovely rich brown colour. Unfortunately the saddle is enormous and puts me in a bit of a chair seat :(

Does it matter what colour - black and brown are boring enough without people fighting about it.

As long as it's not patent...

I don't like black tack, when I was a kid all the cheap Indian leather was black. Good brown leather always looks far better than black imo. I now have a Fell and have (for the moment) decided to put up with black tack-if I were going to show it would be a dark havanna.

Tan looks cracking on the right black horse, just putting that out there ;)

I like black tack on a black horse but if you're even thinking about showing start off right and get brown. If all you had was black tack it wouldn't be the end of the world at local level but if you're buying new tack you might as well get brown and save spending more later if you get serious with showing.

Damn, what old thread? I like old drama threads which have been around since before the dinosaurs, it's my little guilty pleasure.

I think if you searched "are you a tack snob" you'd find it.... unless it got deleted - those were the days :D

I like brown tack but so often modern dark Havana is a very dull brown... Not the nice nutty brown that my old saddles were.
I have a very black horse, about the blackest I've seen and he looked awful in dark Havana... So we have a black saddle because it looked much better.
My western saddle is a rich mahogany brown and looks fine on him.
So I'd say it depends how black the horse is and what shade of brown the saddle is. Either match the colour or contrast it.

Oh, and the western saddle has a really blingy bridle, reins and breastplate... Red stones and studs. :-)
