Just been wondering about my horse's age after having a chat with a couple of people about Irish horses out hunting. They were telling me some stories about their "6 year olds" that had just turned 4 but had no breeding recorded and were sold at that age. I measured my horse at 14.3hh when I bought him, with shoes on. I measured him last week at 15.2hh with shoes off. He was very under muscled and gangly like a youngster but was not sold particularly young. He had been recently imported from Ireland, I didn't pay a great deal for him and the dealers knew nothing about him as they hadn't had him long. Contacted his "breeder" who gave me minimal information about him and that's all I know about his past! He acted like a total baby when I bought him and has started to mature now , I have been producing a few youngsters and it's made me wonder about his age. This is mostly based on the fact that he has no breeding recorded and his year of birth has been scribbled out and re-written twice in the passport over the original date (1st Jan, no specific date) so something tells me it may not be entirely accurate! I took some photos of his teeth for anyone with better knowledge than me to take a look at, they are a bit blurred but it's the best I could do with my phone. If I get some replies I will reveal the age he is meant to be and see how it compares! Makes no difference to me what age he is but I would like to see what others think :)

Thanks for reading

Looks about seven to me, in fact the left hand side looks rising eight. They can vary by quite a bit if underfed or overfed as youngsters but that's the sort of age I would put him at. The tables look a little younger but not a lot.

thanks for the replies, that is the exact (unofficial ) age I thought he might be, given what he looked like/ behaved like when I bought him 2 1/2 years ago, and judging by how much he's grown! He is supposed to be 10 rising 11 in 2015.. by the scruffily rewritten date in the passport, but I've never really thought that was accurate after having owned, and currently owning horses around that age. I know teeth aren't totally accurate but the other factors make me think he is a lot younger than he was sold as! explains quite a lot of his behaviour too
