Pig Oil and Sulphur for Mud Fever

Just add enough to make a custardy consistency. Not sure how much exactly as I just add what's needed to make the right consistency. Hope that helps :)

Thanks Spyda. Sounds like I need to add quite a bit more then as the consistency hasn't changed. Hope I'll still be able to spray it on at that consistency otherwise won't have a hope of getting it near the legs!

Well, if you're planning on spraying it on it wont harm to make the consistency less thick. No harm at all. The Pig oil creates the waterproofing and the sulphur helps kill the bacteria which causes the infection. You don't need heaps of sulphur powder to achieve the desired results. I just create a custardy consistency as this is the easiest to apply with a sponge and sticks well. Just make sure you keep your spray bottle in the warm between applications otherwise it'll be hard to spray no matter how runny the consistency! I speak from experience :D

Have you had success with it getting rid of patches of MF? I've got scabs off with sudocrem, but finiding it really hard to continue with that due to horse kicking so need something to spray on. He's got no scabs but some areas are still quite sore.

I'm lucky that mine doesn't put up too much fuss having her legs treated with topical creams, but am unlucky in that she's got very sensitive skin and is prone to the dread MF in winter.

For persistent patches I've found Ilium Dermapred the best. It's the nearest product to excellent (but now discontinued) Dermobion Green. Guess your problem would be getting it onto his legs if he kicks. Problem is the most effective treatments are either oitments or creams. But speak to your vet. Maybe he knows of something?

Would someone else holding up one of your boys other legs whilst you apply the treatment work? Or would he allow you to apply stable bandages? I was thinking, if he didn't object to bandaging you could apply the appropriate treatment to a pad of cotton wool, apply it and secure it with stable wraps or stable bandages? Just depends how objectionable he is about it. It must hurt, poor boy.

Dermobion was brilliant stuff, I remember it well! I'll give the pig oil and sulphur a go. He doesn't normally kick, but is the world's biggest wimp over any cut/injury (he is a TB after all!) and since he's had MF on his legs, they're a no-go area. It just makes the whole thing so much more frustrating. Holding up a front leg isn't an option either as he wither tramples the poor person at the front or falls over, or both! Haven't tried bandaging in a while so might be worth giving that a go again. MF is such a horrible thing.

Aromaheel is meant to be really good at treating the sore areas. I thought you used pig oil and sulphur once mud fever has gone as a preventative, not on actual mud fever?
