my poor warmblood suffers badly from harvest mites on his legs and face. he does not have any feather.

frontline does not appear to make any difference. ivermectin is the only thing that seems to work.

i've seen posts on pig oil and sulphur. can someone please tell me what it is, where to buy it and how to use it. his scabbiness will be truelly grateful

I've just bought some for my daughter's pony on my farrier's recommendation. I found it on ebay and it has just arrived - I can't remember the seller but if you pm me I'll have a look and will let you know the details.

Mites are hideous things and drive the pony mad - along with his general sweetitch etc.

the cob I ride at my yard has them on his legs and he gets ivermectin and pigoil/sulphur combo as well.......

I think they got recommended it by vets and the vet told them where to get it from

Was only talking to my vet about this today!

She was concerned about the use of oil in hot weather saying it could easily damage the skin. Would you put oil on your own skin in hot weather? I thought it was a good point!

Have you tried Maloseb shampoo and the 2 injections the vet can give (1 followed by another 10 days later).

Not for mites, by friends mare had it for lice at Christmas and it worked.

My other friend had the 1st injection for mites on Friday. Has the 2nd one booked for 10 days later.

I spoke to my vet about injections on Monday. The injection dectomax is similar to (or is) invermectin but it isn't licensed for horses and so if there are problems your insurance company may refuse to pay. My vet recommended a double dose of an ivermectin wormer given orally to treat the mites as this kills them internally. HOWEVER as this involves double dosing I'd suggest you discuss it with your own vet before treating.

thank you for everyone's replies.

being a warmblood, the dear boy has inherited his mite issues from his heftier ancestors, but has delicate skin from the thoroughbreds.
i've seen another post on here about flea collars on pasterns, so he now has a set of 4. hoping this will work

tbh I've heard the injection is unlicenced because it has caused a fatal reaction in some horses. i wouldn't hesitate otherwise.
