pig oil for legs/tail

I buy mine from ebay, and yes its been brill for my TB. Used to be a battle getting the dry mud off his legs with lots of scrubbing and picking bits off, but with the pig oil applied once a week, it slides off with no problems :D

I've just belatedly started using it on my cob who lives out 24/7 and had bog burn. I've already noticed the mud isn't clinging so far up her feathers and wish I'd started with it months ago! I also tried Baby Oil, wasn't anywhere near as effective.

I use it mixed with either Tea Tree or Neem oil but NOT I repeat NOT with sulphur; big mistake - brought my boy up very red, sore and pink, and don't think this is an isolated incident as understand that vets see a lot of horses who've been made very sore with this particular combination. But there's always someone on here who'll recommend it very freely!

But pig oil on its own is very useful stuff indeed.

I get mine from TC Feeds in Bedfordshire. It's fabulous stuff, apply liberally over his feathers and work in well. Mud comes off easily! I know some who use baby oil, but not sure if it works as well :)

I buy mine from Cox & Robinsons and it's great stuff :) I put some on her legs and tail and it stops all that horrid mud from sticking. Also, when she's been clipped I put a drop in some hot water and lightly rub her all over and she just shines.

Edited to say, it's also good when they have a bit of scurf along the back and bum, gets rid of it straight away.

I wondered why people mix it with sulphur?? I always use it neat or I mix it with hot water :)

The sulphur is anti-bacterial, and works really well with pig oil to sort out mud fever, and prevent it.

No-one is saying don't do a patch test, but the same applies to pretty much anything. A LOT of horses are allergic to Tea Tree oil - also Citronella - but many people don't test for these.

All ordered and will be done this weekend if it arrives :) thanks x

It's probably been mentioned but please do a 3 day patch test! Mine was fine after the 24hr test but then I pasted it on and a few days later it burned through the hair and skin on her legs!:( fantastic stuff if your horse isn't allergic

I put pig oil in a spray bottle for manes and tails, and it has been amazing - I have a young fell pony with a really dense tail there would be no hope of getting through with a brush but a few squirts of oil and the brush glides through, then once it's all brushed out I spray loads in to keep it that way as long as possible! My other little fell has an amazingly thick long but still baby fluff mane and it makes it possible to brush that too. Used to use baby oil but complete convert now!!
