Pig Oil & Sulphur - advice please

My mare has had flexural dermatitis for some months. It has now more or less cleared up, but several people have advised using PO & S to prevent it recurring.

Having gone on the internet I'm totally confused as to the product. I had assumed it would be a ready-to-use preparation. But it seems from the adverts that it may be that you have to buy the PO and S separately and then mix them. Also, from the advertisements it sounds as if some of them are a powder, which is not what I want. I want a liquid (oil) substance which I can apply to the vulnerable areas. One vet said it would greatly help the detritus to come off.

Though it's wideley recommended, I was surprised to find my local big horse feed merchants didn't stock it, only pig oil on its own, and appeared not to have heard of PO & S.

I'm really muddled, so your advice would be most welcome.

PO&S is a liquid, in the instance where you buy them separately you mix the flour (flower?) of sulphur with the pig oil resulting in a liquid. However if you look for "sussexcobs0" on ebay you can buy it reaady mixed.

Buy the pig oil and sulphur powder seperatly and mix it to a milkshake consistancy. Have a look at this.

Pig oil is a liquid and sulphur is powder (or flour/flower of sulphur) which you buy seperately then mix together i use an old supplement bucket and an old dandy brush to brush it on .I believe pig oil is just unperfumed base oil for baby oil and not actually to do with pigs but if anybody knows different? it is a bit messy and do a little patch test first as i have heard some horses can be sensitive to it . You also do end up with a horse with bright yellow legs but it does leave feather silky soft and i sometimes just brush plain pig oil into his legs the day before hunting mud seems to not stick as much.
But Farriers do not appreciate recent applications!!!!

Good point re the yellow legs but they do go white again honest!

DS I believe PO was originally used in the show ring by those who show pigs.

Before resorting to PO & S have you tried using Nizerol on the affected areas? You can buy it from the chemist. Dilute in hand hot water and lather up well , working well into the skin. Leave to dry. I used to have this problem with my elbows and since using Nizerol on it it's gone.

Thanks for the Nizerol tip. Someone else mentioned it. I'm going to do one affected leg with PO & S and the other with Nizerol and see which works best for her.
