So I have just discovered the miracle that is pig oil. I put some on my boy's legs at the weekend and they are still squeaky clean.
So my question is: Do you just put it on feathers or more? I'm thinking knees and hocks currently (resisting the urg to cover him in!) Does anyone put it in the tail? Just don't want to go too far and regret it later!

Yep, on the tail, mane and feathers. Although not in summer because of the risk of sunburn.
Will put in the final rinsing water after washing too, but not on the body as it could clog the pore's and make the saddle slip.
It's quite good for scabby knees and allows you to comb out the scabs without it hurting.

Personally I don't mix with Sulphur but use on its own.

Tail and feather, also (perhaps weirdly but it works!) wiped in the inside of their ears to prevent those horrid little bugs that get inside and bite them. :D

I use (weirdly) a small seaside bucket, tip about an inch in the bottom and a cheap 2 inch paint brush (the kind you get in a pack of 5 different sized paint brushes). I then paint him in the direction of the hair :D I do coronet band to about half way up the 'shin' on all four legs.

Thanks folks, so I am thinking feathers, knees, hocks, tail and maybe mane. I was planning to hog this weekend but if pig oil will stop the mud, he may have been saved from the clippers!
Trottingon- I just got some in a spray bottle (just plain pig oil, no sulphur) and sprayed a bit on, I did wash his legs first.

My haffy has a super long mane and tail so I put baby oil in it after washing to stop it tangling and repel mud. I believe it is all paraffin oil and I find it a bit handier to come by baby oil in the supermarket :-) will probably run a bit over her legs when it is very muddy, I find sprays take aaages and she gets grumpy me chasing her around with it :-)

I mix 1 litre pig oil with 1 tablespoon sulphur is a tiny bucket with a lid. It looks like banana milk shake.

Just scoop it up with hands and work it through the feathers once a week, right down to the skin and as far up the legs as you want. You can do the belly too if you need too. I use this mix on the roots of the mane and the top of the dock too and then comb plain pig oil through the long hair.

So far so good, hands are nice and soft too.

I put it in a squeezy drinks bottle & spray it on & rub it in. Remember to take off rings thought as it can tarnish them. I put on legs (all the way up), tail, mane & under his tummy.

I make up a solution of fairly warm water & pig oil or baby oil. I then sponge it from the hocks & knees down, when it's been really muddy I have done it from tops of legs down. Works brilliantly & horse has never had mudfever since doing this & I completely stopped hosing legs when coming in at night as very little mud sticks. I redo it every 4-6 wks.

I buy a 5L can of Pig Oil and pour some out into a small tub and apply it with an old child's size body brush. For first application I liberally apply it from above knees down, and just above hocks down. I also brush some through the lower section of her tail. I then 'top up' about every 3rd day to keep the protection going, by applying a lighter coating. You can tell when you need to apply some more as the mud starts to stick again! Mine wears a Snuggy Hood and Spik n Span rug under her turn out rug, so there's little else I need to apply the pig oil as she's covered! It works brilliantly and saves so much time.

I buy 20 litres a time which I get from Matt Burkes as often he is at shows I go to so I collect from him to save postage.

As I have two very hairy beasts, it is applied from knee/hock to floor weekly at this time of year and I put sulphur in every other week. I also use it on anything that sticks out of the rug to stop mud sticking.

My two have their tails bagged and manes plaited so I don't use it on these areas, but many people do.

I put in a small bucket and then apply with a paint brush and give it a quick rub in, takes less than 5 mins a horse.

Beware P&S turns white gold black and some horses have a bad reaction so always do a patch test for a week first.

I mix in a few drops of Neem Oil and/or Tea Tree oil into the pig oil before I apply it. Keeps midges off a treat!!!! I use a sponge and just wipe a thin layer over my boy before he goes out. Midges hate oil on a coat, and as mine has Sweet Itch I wipe it all around his ears, forelock & face before turning out and he hasn't had ANY sore bits on his face this year from doing it.

Also I slap it on his feet up to the knees and then when he comes in all mucky the mud will just flop off and its easy!

I also brush it through manes and tails; brings up a lovely shine plus if you've mixed in the Neem oil, keeps flies and midges away too.

Wonderful stuff! Indespensable. The only thing I don't do is mix in sulphur with it - tried it on my boy but it was too strong for him and made him all pink and sore, poor lad.
