pig oil

Hi,

Somebody kindly suggested I use pig oil on my horses legs in the winter to help combat mild mud fever. Would like to try it - but where do I get it from? Tack shop/butcher/other?

I know they sell it on ebay, so might be worth a browse.
Also Surre Equestrian do most thinks cheaply, so probs worth a look.

I get it from my local farm shop (WCF) but most tack shops will sell it...its not made from actual pigs by the way so you wont get it from your butcher!!

Thank you Gigglepig - very relieved. I'm vegetarian so the thought of plastering pig oil on my horse's legs was slightly off putting.

LOL this made me giggle as I thought the same

It used to make me feel nauseous when I used it until I read it was made FOR pigs, not OF pigs

I bougth mine from Countrywide: but beware....it made my mare's leg hair fall out in big clumps! I'm not the only onle on here this has happened too!

Our vets are recommendning a new procedure for mud fever- i used it this summer on photosynethesis scabs and it works.

1. clean the leg
2. slather scabs in udder cream
3. wrap in cling film
4. leave on overnight
5. next morning wash with hot hibiscrub (should be very hot, not boiling but enough to tolerate your hand being in it)
6. scabs fall off a treat

then....manage the mud fever!

agree with bugly. not good for sensitive skin. i have very good success with supermarket own brand baby oil with 10 drops of lavender oil in it. i have used this fro 20 yrs now on so many different kinds of horses and it has never failed me. the baby oil is a water/mud barrier and lavender will protect against any bacteria if they get a little scrape
