PIG oil

Over a cup of coffee at the yard yesterday, we were all discussing fethers and PIG oil came up - I asked does it come from pigs, and whilst everyone laughed at me, they didnt know where it did come from or why its called pig oil - does the PIG stand for something? The only half sensible suggestion put forward was that it isnt from pigs because it would be called pork oil?!!

I would be grateful if someone could enlighten me.....

It is mineral based isn't it? and includes paraffin? As far as I know the name isn't an abbreviation and nor does it mean it comes from pigs

Pig oil is DUN DA DA Da da dun.... Parrafin oil.. beleive it or not..

It was called pig oil, but the people who original 'made' the pig oila nd sulphur mix.. so the recipe wasnt pinched?! (sad)

Its made for pigs, not from pigs you'll be glad to know! I think its used to oil them for showing and keep their skin in good condition and supple. I think its actually paraffin oil.

It's mineral oil and originally used by farmers on pigs to stop their skin cracking when dry.

O Im so thick I thought it was oil from pigs lol I have never seen or used it just heard people talk about it!!

I though Pig and Hog are parts of motor engines too. Hence motorbikes called hogs by some people....... So extrapolated a bit far maybe, but I think its some oil used intially for heavy machinery!

Its real name is Liquid Paraffin (I think).

People who have horses with lots of feather use it a lot for protection. And if you think that the ponies at HOYS are very shiny under the lights, it is because they are wiped over before they go in the ring with Pig Oil!!!

Tangoharvey, have you had Tereasa_f's feather care pm? If you have a horse with lots of feather (i found out from on here they are never called feathers

) then its a very handy pm to have, explaines all about using pig oil, i'm guessing from the head shot of your horse that there are some very hairy legs to match. Teresa_f has said in other posts that she is happy to pm her artical to others.

It's white technical oil (not quite the same as parrafin oil, which is much thicker and gloopier - it's closer to baby oil without the scent) and as others have said it was initially used to poil pigs for showing etc.

The Harley Davidson is a hog, the name arises from the Harley Owners Group, (H.O.G.)

umm NO, the Harley Owners Group was named deliberately to have the accronym of HOG, a name Harley motorcycles have had LOOOOOOOOOOONG before the H.O.G. was formed!

Hubby tells me that the term HOG was being used long before the Harley Owners Group came into existence!
Apparently the name comes from a bunch of farm hand boys in 1920s that called themselves the Hog Boys and used to race Harleys.
