Just wondered what your thoughts were on this. I watched a video last night on a well known dressage rider who uses pig oil to make her horses shine in the winter. Thought this was a great idea! However have also read recently in a well known horsey magazine about problems with using pig oil. Having never used it myself just wanted your advice/experiences. I have read that it helps hair grow back quicker, my boy is covered in wounds that have healed but the hair is taking ages to grow back, just wondered whether its worth a try?!

I use pig oil on my hairy horses feather, I have never had a reaction to it, but I am aware that this can happen and do a skin test before whacking it staright on. I have not heard that it promotes hair growth, but, by keeping the feather silky, it will prevent hair breakage.

Cornucresine is good for encouraging hair growth, it's a bit messy though.

Coconut oil is also very good.

Everyone I know swears by it!! It 'repels' mud and dust. I never use it myself as I'd need to use mountains to keep my grey clear!

I might give it a go then. Hes not hairy, very fine actually but just wanted to use it as a show shine, and in winter to prevent mud etc on his legs.

You can also get pig oil and sulphur which a lot of people use to help prevent feather mites. No this is where there maybe a problem as it should not be used regularly as the sulphur is quite strong. So this is where the mix up could be. What we did was use pig oil on its own one week and then the sulphur one the other week. But pig oil on its own should be fine if its just for the shine factor.

Aggghhh thats possibly it, thanks Kaylum! As he hasnt got any feathers and mites are not a problem, ill just use the pig oil on its own. Thanks all!

Do a patch test as it can cause a reaction.

I use litres of the stuff mixed with sulphur on the legs. I also use it in winter on anything that sticks out of the rug, neck, legs etc to have the mud slip off.

Also very good to mix a drop in hot water and use over the coat to give a good shine, but if you have any dirt in the coat, it will rise the surface.

Some people use it on manes and tails as a detangler.

If your horse reacts to pig oil, then try going to shireoils.com as they do a more refined oil which is less likely to cause a reaction.

For fast hair growth on rubs and cuts, for me there is only one product and that is megatek which you can get from tailgator.co.uk. I use it mixed 50 - 50 with water every other day on mane, forelock and tail to keep my traditional with lots of thick, strong and fast growing hair.
