Friends are looking into purchasing a mini pot bellied pig. Anyone know where to start in finding one? I've also just been told you need a licence to move pigs around..would this also count for private sales?
Not sure about Pot bellies but we get a couple of saddle-backs a year and we send off movement license paperwork with our county parish holding (CPH) number.
If you get them from a decent breeder or a farm they will advise you.
yes you need to send of movement forms to defra and you will also need to get a section put in on your drivng licence to allow you to transport livestock - only just found out about this bit not sure when DEFRA will start implementing it
We had a pet pig for years. Your friend's will need to have a registered holding number from DEFRA (I know it seems madness just for a pet pig, but you can get the info from DEFRA's website). You need to have a movement licence in order to move any pigs. Have your friends got experience of keeping a pot bellied? If you don't watch out, they tend to get incredibly fat. It is also against the law to feed them household scraps! (Because of the risk of swine fever). After our pig died (aged 12), I decided against having another one because of all the rules & regs (which I knew about because I worked for a specialist pig vet). I am glad she died before the outbreak of Foot & Mouth as I would have been worried sick about her.
Sorry it isnt' horse related, but nowhere else seemed suited to a piggy post!
Didn't know that about swine fever. They have pig experience (through helping with friends full sized pot bellied) My sis works for DARD, so think we'll question her lots
Its F&M they are more worried about! Isn't it amazing that whole streets and families kept themselves fed through the war and nobody worried about swill and no cases of F&M---mind you we didn't import the rest of the worlds crap then!
