Under a month ago I had the vet out for what I thought would lead to That Decision for the 23 yo senior Cushing’s mare.

She’d got dull and footy. Vet came out with the portable x Ray to take lateral view images of all 4 feet as I feared laminitis, but they came back clear.

Vet’s suggestion was firstly that some horses can get overly sensitive to Prascend, which can make them dull, and to reduce her dose from 1.5 tablets daily to 1 tablet daily. Bloods to be re tested in 6 weeks.

Secondly to try Keratex hoof hardener on her feet, as her soles are very soft due to the relentless wet.

I now have my cheeky happy mare back, who is bouncing round the field with a glint in her eye. I will continue to do my best by her, but it is not yet her time.

(Apologies for the thin shavings bed, she’s only in for a couple of hours in the morning for her breakfast and a hay net).
