16hh gelding, previous career hurdling. Had Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon injury and was pin and bar fired

Now has injured tendon again - scanned in July which showed - core lesion involving the lateral lobe of the SDFT in the lower third of the cannon region.

Ultrasound on Friday showed - core lesion to be healing relatively well with little demarcation from the surrounding tendon. The fibre pattern in this area and in the palmar part of the tendon more generally was only moderate however.

Have been advised further 3-4 months paddock rest and then gentle return to work over further 3-4 months. Should be able to do lesuire activities and occasional hunting.

Thoughts on this? (need some feedback please - no one who understands this in this house!)
Do you think this is realistic

Also would you take on this horse as a loan

Realistic recovery time

I would be happy with leisure activities - RC level stuff - wouldn't be so happy with his history risking him hunting in random going - wet/dry/deep and unpredictable ground.....

Depends what you want to do - if you are prepared to be cautious and over protective and make sure that he's always fit enough for the work you want to do with him, then if everything works for you, then yes why not?

However, I wouldn't risk hunting him

Does this help?

Thanks, just need some feedback and this is helpful.

He's actually my aunts horse and she and I are trying to work out what we're going to do with him once he's back in work. I can't really take another one right now as the 'inn is full' currently and I am worried that there is a high risk that he may get passed pillar to post if she sells him

It's a really difficult situation potentially

My horse has been pinfired, he had a second tendon injury Mar 08, by Aug 09 he was back in full work, we no longer jump tho!!

Was the toughest 18 months tho, but well worth the hard work

Just to be a little bit dense, you do mean the same leg don't you??

the recovery time sounds pretty realistic, but be prepared for it to take even longer. The tendon is likely to never be quite as strong as it was before and so more easily injured. Like the other replies don't think hunting, or even jumping, is likely to be an option in the future... How old is your gelding? I hope things work out for you both!

I was always taught that a horse with a tendon injury usually is best after having a year off, then many weeks of walking afterwards to harden the legs off...
I've got a tb mare from polo who is pinfired all round, suspected she did a suspensery and got hit by what seems everything on her legs! She happily will go hacking and we are planning on hunting her soon, although her legs will be strapped for this, just for a little more support.
Tbh as long as the horse has had enough time off, and had proper fittening work, and care is taken to avoid hard/really boggy ground i see no problem with hunting them.
Any help?

sorry for late reply, but I have a pin & bar fired horse on permanent loan. I've had him for 5 years & he's 21 now. He's been great - we hunt & I've team chased him once.

I wouldn't say he's been sound 100% of the time, but maybe 90%. He actually is owned by a vet who knows his full history & is more than happy for me to hunt him occassionaly. (10 days per season). Infact, they would be disappointed if I didn't. Obviously I keep an eye on the ground & take good care of him.

Most of the time we hack, so I'm sure there would be people like me who would like to loan him.
