Pinfiring

Can anyone tell me whether this is still done and whether it is legal?

Does anyone have or know of a horse that has previously been pinfired and either gone on to a successful and sound competitive career or has subsequently gone lame?

Trying to do some research on this.

Firing is now illegal in this country. Not sure if they still can do it in Ireland?

we have pony that is pinfired, he was done about 18months ago, he was due to be put to sleep as had awful problems with scarring on his angular ligament and it was unable to pass through. he competed at the home pony international last weekend, hes 17 years old. without the pin firing i feel he wouldnt be where he is now as we had tried everything else i do think your right its not legal here

no pinfiring is banned it is a horrible thing to do!

Pin firing is barberic and illegal. Might strengthen the tendons might not.. but wither way, would you let someone pinfire your childs legs (if you unsure, would you let someone push hot needs into your childs legs???) NO didnt think so.. so dont do it to you horses.

Pinfiring is a misconception, espeically in the racing world, that it will strengthen tendons, especially if they are damaged and then fired.

As lou pointed out it is sticking hot needles and hot rods round the horses tendons, normally in the forelimbs.
This causes rows of straight scar tissue to form along the tendon.
Scar tissue is not even marginally as strong as original tendon tissue, so if the horse managed to damage the original, what makes people think they will cope of the weaker subsequent tendon they have created?!!!

I think it is ridiculous and stupid, alot of horses I know who have had it done have resultently gone lame, cripplingly so, much earlier than they should do (as in at 8-15yo, rather than a healthy horse of 20-25 getting old worn out tendons etc) I know each horse is different, but you are not giving hte horse a fighting chance if you totally b*gger the whole tendon before they even reach 5 (using racing here as an example!)
