The last time we attempted jumping we were eliminated in a 'confidence giving' 2ft jumping class, Louie's very delicate confidence was at rock bottom. He's the sort of pony that simply knocking a pole can knock him back a level so when I fell off the week before his nerves were shattered. After a quite jump at home to finish on a good note I decided to give him 4-5months off jumping, it's only something I want to do if he enjoys it so if he isn't it's not an issue I felt I had to push.

Cue getting back into jumping, we started with pole work which he found ridiculously exciting (lots of bucking, squealing and pinging) but I thought at least he has his enthusiasm back. We've been building up from there and today as our beach ride got cancelled (stupid sand yachts) we decided to go to my boss for a lesson, and this is the result:

I can see why people mistake him for a girl- far too pretty!

He didn't look at any of the spooky things. He was a bit overly keen to begin with but once he settled he jumped out of a lovely rhythm and just seemed happy and relaxed. He is quite scopey so it will be very easy to ruin his confidence again by putting the jumps up so we want to take it nice and steady to not overface him. I am so ridiculously proud of him and feeling very positive.

But to put a downer on the mood I got him in from the field to find he had a very swollen lip. What it looks like is a bee sting on the inside of his mouth, lots of antihistamines later he seems happier but keeping a close eye to make sure it doesn't turn serious. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery, we were meant to be stressaging on Tuesday and I really hope it doesn't get bad enough to warrant a vet visit. Lots of healing vibes needed for the poor boy, I can imagine its quite painful!

Also quick q, is it okay to compete sj in bandages? After a lot of playing around we found he is not happy in boots (have tried every type I can think of) and I'm not happy with nothing as he is so sensitive so bandages seem to be a good shout.

ETA: Missed out the best ones:

Sounds like the break from jumping was just what he needed! :) Hopefully the bee sting will clear up quickly...sounds like just the sort of thing to happen when grazing in the spring; I've seen lots of bumblebees about! (Or maybe one bumblebee, lots of times.)

Louis and Smokes are twins, far far too similar! Down to self-harming tendencies- Smokes decided to blow an abscess this morning and has seriously smelly feet now... If he's not struggling to eat or drink I'd just leave him be, it'll go down quickly enough on it's own if it is a sting and if it doesn't you'll need the vet regardless of what you've done for it.

I just hope he continues feeling happy and confident! Aww thank you JFTD! I feel the same towards fergs :p

The crutches are my Boss's she has a tendency to leave them in random places! Before we could jump the black one we had to remove a rottweiler from the tyres :p

It is scary how alike they are! I do love smokes! I'm very nervous about what I'm going to find tomorrow, I have no idea how he managed it!

Fergs doesn't jump like that! But he would have jumped the rottweiler :p

Fingers crossed for speedy recovery and prolonged pinging confidence!

I worry if we included the rottie he would have landed on her on purpose, they don't exactly see eye to eye!

I'm not sure if they were done on purpose to give him a bit to look at without me noticing, I probably should be more observant. :p

Thank you both, the main thing is he enjoys himself and I think he definitely was yesterday.

Lip is exactly the same today, there is still puss coming out but as the sting is on the inside it's very difficult to get to. I'm beginning to wonder if it is a sting. I'll see how it is tonight but I am thinking its going to be a vet visit purely because I can't get at it to look at it :(

Fantastic photos, and those chair fillers look scary so well done Louie for jumping them so well! I think a vet visit for the lip if there's pus especially, hope he feels better soon.

He didn't even look at them, we were more than shocked when he jumped first time :p

Vet coming tomorrow :( have given danilon for the pain tonight. Bloody pony, I do feel for him though, must be pretty painful.

Thank you :)

The swelling has burst out his lip today, looks very sore but he's still his usual annoying self so can't be too fussed. Just waiting on vet now :( I love vet bills :p

Photo of his lip today, the swelling has mostly gone down but I think there's still a bit of puss left. I just hope that whatever has caused it is out now but going to try and draw it out using hot cloths.

Hope he gets better soon, and the photos are fab.

re: bandages, I've never seen it sj but I don't see any reason why you couldn't. People have gone xc in bandages before!
