So I have a pink nosed boy. Has lovely field with plenty of natural shelter, which he only will use in the rain not the sun. When the sun comes out he basks in it. I have no option to bring him in- nor would I want to, as he is happy. However he is getting a sunburnt nose! Only slightly however. I do apply suncream- does anybody have a good one to try? Mine just sort of rubs off. I muzzle him at night- should I perhaps muzzle him During the day instead? Would that stop the sunburn? Or does anybody use a fly mask with a long nose? Does that work?

Apologies for the amount of questions!! And a massive thanks to anyone who can try and answer them.

yes I've used it and his nose is all cleared up. it doesn't bother him at all either. I'm not using it much now as I'm bringing him in during the day. I find that sun cream doesn't last very long. I bought the cheaper one and it's fine :)

I used a long fly mask for my old horse as he hated having sun cream on his nose. He never had sunburn after that.

One of my girls has a pink nose & I've always found that a factor 50 sun cream designed for kids works wonders :D Kids are always getting in a mess, so sun cream aimed at them is more durable & obviously factor 50 works better than 15, 20 or 30. I used to apply it pretty much every day after it starts getting warm & slightly sunny (apart from when it chucks it down for more than a day) & found that even when she'd dunked her nose in the water, rubbed it on the grass, etc. it built up enough of a residual layer & soaked in a bit to stop her getting burnt between applications.. Now, however, she is muzzled 24/7 (except while I'm doing stuff with her, feeding her, etc.) as she's on very good grazing & am finding little need for sun cream :) But maybe if you apply some before he has his muzzle on it may have chance to soak in while he can't rub it off on anything? ;)

I second the nice thick factor 50 sun cream, stays on really well. problem I find with nose net is it gets broken or removed too easily, but rubbing, grooming... like fly masks I keep loosing! I also use sudocrem on any pink bits that look a bit sore

Banana Boat Factor 100 is what I use for my pink skinned horses. Robin even gets burned eyelids :(

Not one of them will tolerate a mask with nose piece.

Mainly I just bring them in for the day, it has already hit the high 20's for us.

Have you got butter cups? A few of our pink nose neddys look like they have sunburn but it is infact buttercup burn! Solution is to remove buttercups! Be careful with sudocreme, its oil based and can cause burning. High factor sunblock is the way forward.

I can only get down in the evenings so I don't think even sudocrem lasts the full 24 hours of grazing! Very interested in those nose guards, but - can anyone recommend me a 'field-safe' headcollar, or suggest what I should be looking for? Many thanks!

I swear by sudocream for my little mare. Lasts longer than sunscreen and acts as a real sunblock plus it's cheap too :)

I have read somewhere on here that sunburn can be caused by a mineral imbalance. I can't remember which one it is though. Anyway I have a very pink nosed pony, she has been getting pro balance mineral supplement for the last 6 months and so far( fingers crossed) hasn't burnt, I haven't used any sun cream or face masks this year. It's worth thinking about as I often used to wonder why she used to burn on seemingly not very sunny days then on days when I could burn in half an hour she'd be fine.
