Now that the sunny long days have arrived i'm curious to hear your tips for avoiding burnt noses.
I have been smothering Piz Buin factor 50 on my boy's nose every day but he has unfortunately got burnt round the side of his mouth. I think the cream isn't doing its job because he rubs it off eating and drinking.

I have ordered some Net Tex sunblock which im hoping will be better :) I am also considering a nose shade muzzle but as a last resort.

Have any of you pink nosed horse owners got any tips or recommendations?
P.S the fields at my yard have no shade or shelter :'(

Thanks!!!

The most reliable way imo is to use a nose net on a fieldsafe headcollar. They don't interfere with eating and drinking and are there all the time so if you are late putting cream on, or get caught out with unexpected sunshine the net will still do its job. The most robust one I have found yet is handmade by a lady on ebay and costs about a tenner. All the branded ones I have tried have either ripped or been too small. Mine is intermittent about having cream on so if he's willing I'll put some on as well but the net alone does the job.

Filtabac is brilliant. It's really thick and gloopy so really stays put, sometimes for up to two days. You can easily put it on in the evening and have it last until the end of the next day. It's expensive at £20+ for a big pot but a little goes a long way so it usually last me about 18 months. I put it on everything like cuts, grazes and sores. It's anti-bacterial, a sun block and a soothing cream.

Have you got a link? Mines in during the day but hes getting hanging his head over the door in the day time sunbathing!

As my lad also has liver issues he has cream and a nose cover from innohorse in Germany, they had better uv protection than most of the options over here, though check out the Charlie's products page too for other good options, but pricier

My Mare has a very pink face - nose and eye area.....she woont let me near her with any sort of cream so i use i full face fly mask with nose, shires do a very good one with a really long nosecover which seems a better fit than any others i have used. Got caught out the other week and she has got some sun burn :(

Mine will destroy any nose nets - usually taking the fly mask off in the process and I can't take the risk of her pink skinned eyes getting burnt.

I found Red Horse products honeyheal stayed put, put someone has recommended zinc oxide cream so I might try that.

She's got a muzzle on during the day time as well and I was hoping that might provide some protection, but looking at the flaky bits it obviously didn't. Feeling like a bad fat pony mum today.

I use the nose screen though considered the nose shade too. It seems to come round further to the side than others which is good as it does come up one side. It is attached to a IV horse field headcollar and has been in daily/constant use since October. So pleased with it staying put better and covering more than a fly mask he just has a separate one bought this year.

Bit random but I use pan stick foundation on my horse. It has great uv protection. He looks ridiculous but neither of us care.

Mine has ASDA kids suncream, it goes on green and smells of ice cream but fingers crossed she's not been burnt again since I started using it. I've also got a nose cover and field safe headcoller coming to use as well hopefully this will stop any sun burn.

I have been using the Aldi version of P20 on my v pink nosed boy last summer and this and so far no problems apart from the one day I forgot to put in on :(

It takes 15 mins to soak in so I leave him in the stable with no access to water for 15 mons before putting him out so it doesnt wash off

I use Filtabac too, it is fantastic stuff, stays on all day and my elderly pony has never had a burnt nose since. Big thumbs up from me!

Cream works on my guy but it's possible he's 'burning' it on things like butttercups . I use sun cream and a fly mask with the nose net .

i found even the waterproof and kids 50+ creams didn't last well.
the gold label sun block- specifically for horses- is much thicker and works well.
but I find a nose mask is easier- but some makes are not as comfortable and too close to my mares nose, or not long enough to cover all her pink nose.
spent a bit more on a cashel fly mask and it is great

Another vote for Gold Label sunblock - my horse had pink heels that got sunburnt and human sunblock made them really sore - the Gold Label stuff stayed on well even on dewy mornings and no sore patches!
For his nose he had a full fly mask with nose guard but I did put the sunblock on too as he had a habit of rolling the mask off sometimes...

I use "my pony sunblock", now rebranded as "my pet sunblock". It's a powder with applicator. It covers well and if I put it on on Saturday afternoon, by Sunday morning it will still be in place.

My horse won't tolerate nose nets or fly masks with nose covers. He just rips them or takes them off. If I can't find the sunblock I mentioned above, I use Nivea kids factor 50+ sensitive and water resistant suncream. It seems to stay put quite well, although my horse doesn't like me putting it on!

Full face fly mask all the way for me. I find it far better that sun cream, which can also be a pain with a sensitive skinned horse - mine will rub at the sun cream, causing some of the hair on her nose to come off. I also worry about applying sun cream round her eyes in case she gets hot and it runs into them. I have a Cashell one for her but it does rub slightly so am looking at different ones atm.

I like the Roma Buzz Away with nose. I bought a size bigger to cover all the nose and I haven't had one come off yet. As I buy the bigger size it does wear the nose bit but it covers all pink bits well
I keep a stock of them just in case they get wrecked and if the nose gets ripped/ruined I cut the remainder off and give the noseless one to a friend
