Ok, mare is doing my head in with her physco panics and anxious behaviour so I was going to put her on NAF Pink Powder which (quote) .........

"A concentrated feed balancer containing naturally occurring yeasts and probiotics, essential for the maintenance of correct gut function. Feed whenever the natural microbial balance of the gut is likely to be disrupted. Ideal for horses prone to anxiety, loss of appetite or weight loss."

but I then got thinking about Brewers yeast which is (quote) .........

"Brewers Yeast is the perfect natural source of a wide range of B vitamins, It has long been a favourite of horse keepers. Brewers Yeast is effective against the effects of stress, behavioural problems, anxiety, mareishness and travel stress. Its high quality amino acids encourage a healthy population of gut flora, ensuring better hindgut digestion. It also provides copper and zinc, and is particularly useful for hard working horses, lactating mares, anxious and problem horses. "

Pink Powder is £15 and Brewer's Yeast £5 for a little less amount. If you have experience of feeding both of these products would you say they are doing the same thing or different? I did try Brewer's yeast for a couple of months about a year ago and it didn't seem to do much really.

Thank you

I'm a complete fan of Pink Powder!! It turned my naughty, skinny, loose bowled, cracked hooved tb into a plump dream boat (questionable by others) with good hooves

I only meant to use it for a month to settle him in when I first bought him but have kept him on it because the results are fab.

I think the main difference is that PP is a complete vit/min supplement too so that maybe why there is a price difference.

I pay £13 for a tub which lasts 7-8 weeks so not bad going.

Goodluck with your demon

I use NAF pp to help with my tbs digestive system. He is an older lad...29 and struggled in the Winter, always picking up tummy upsets and bugs. Since he has been on this stuf, 2 years now, I have had no such problems so for me I think it is a little miracle!!

Have used pink powder very successfully too. As fredtb says it can be used instead of a balancer as an all round vit/min supplement which is the advantage (and hence price difference) over Brewers yeast

right: you have convinced me: thank you! keep your fingers crossed that the witch calms down...her problems are more physiological than hormonal ( she's a worrier etc!).

Even though everyone's already convinced you, Haffieliesel, re. the Pink Powder, I'm going to back everybody up here anyway.

I use it all the time as a balancer/supplement for my 27 year old mare (retired broodmare) who has hardly any teeth and is rather difficult to keep weight on. I've used it on her for about the last three years and have seen for myself what a positive difference it makes to her.

The summer before last, I took her off of it for about 6 weeks, (I thought I'd try saving money) but considering she was on decent summer grazing, and the rest of her diet had stayed the same, she still lost both weight and bloom during that 6 week period, which returned as soon as I decided to spend my well earned money on another tub of Pink Powder.

She hasn't come off of it since, and I've now put my other (not so old at 24) oldie onto it also.

Must admit to having never tried Brewer's Yeast though - so can't comment on that.

I have taken my horse off topspec feed balancer after 3 years. I always found he had quite runny poos in the autumn and spring grass flush. I have put him on brewers yeast and found that he is much better for it - he doesn't tend to bloat like he used to with grass flushes too. He looks seriously shiny but I do feed linseed and apple cider vinegar as well.

I think the brewers yeast has had a calming action on my other nutty warmblood.

I use brewer's yeast - more as a calmer really but also seems to act as a prebiotic and stop loose droppings when my boy gets stressy going partying! I've also used pink powder successfully so not really clear about the difference except the latter also has vitamin/minerals added.
