Hi All, I am in the process of getting my little THB onto a good supplement instead of using a balancer. I want something that will protect from ulcers and also keep him sane. He has been on Coligone for 5 days now and the results are really good but it will be expensive to keep him on it forever. Was thinking of either using pink powder or the Norvite supplement (wich is PH balanced to the aberdeen soil). He lives out 24/7 and is in ok condition (only had him 3 weeks and he has been rested from racing for 3 months prior). He is just doing in hand work and pessoa till the end of the month when I get my saddle. He likes to eat wood (havent seen him windsuck but dont want him to start) can anyone offer any advice!! this feeding business is a mind field!

Hiya,

I haven't tried the other two but my TB is on Pink Powder. He has it with Hifi and some fibre nuts. He used to lick the soil but he hasn't done that since being on the pink powder and he looks really well. This is a photo of him a few weeks back, I don't know how much is to do with the pink powder or not but i'm pleased with how he has wintered :).

here it is:-

I got the liquid off the internet for 18 quid incl postage and it only lasts 10 days.. If u only feed 50ml once a day. It is brilliant stuff but rather going to use it just for stressful situations

At the point to point yard we used pink powder on everything, and it really made a difference, especially on a very poor horse which came with ulcers. It put on loads of weight, had no more problems with ulcers and won its first race with us.

Do u just use the pink powder or would you also use it with a multi vitamin? I feed alfa a mollassas free, baileys top line and balancer( I want to substitute the balancer with pink powder and/or norvite multivit.

I have an ottb amd I feed him calm and condition, hifi molasses frer and brewers yeast.the difference in him in 3 weeks is amazing, he windsucks much less and he is putting on condition nicely.he gets adlib haylage also. I believe pink powder has brewers yeast in although correct me if im wrong! (trots off to go and check) :)

I'd feed the Norvite kind. I fed it for years (although have stopped, should really go back onto it again!). You get the 2 types too, one basic and the other meant for competition horses / breeding etc. so if you want the high spec one go for the latter - think it has B vits as extra. I think its cheaper than feeding PP or Coligone etc. and like you say its made for our soils so its slightly higher in selenium which our soils lack for example. I used to sell this stuff so I should know more about it but have forgotten!

When I first got mine I put him on Pink Powder, really made a difference IMO. I just did a months course and it helped with the weight gain and windsucking. He sometimes gets a little grumpy if people have been feeding him carrots all the time (I believe because he is sensitive to sugar ) and I give him a weeks course and it sorts his stomach out :)

Obviously, wasn't just the Pink Powder alone. I feed Calm & Condition with Alfa A (in quite large quantities). He gets ad lib haylage (would prefer hay, but atm the yard only offers haylage) and maximum amount of turnout

Mine windsucks occasionally and I just paint everything with cribbox. That should stop him chewing :D You don't have to repaint for ages either as its waterproof etc and lasts for a while.

A balancer wont prevent a horse from getting ulcers.

Most generic balancers have a lot of waste products in, so are basically wasting your money. Ie pink powder you can just feed brewers yeast and magnesium for the same effect.....

If you want mineral supplements as you feel your grazing is deficient in something ie dull coat, cracks in hooves etc then Pro Hoof from ebay is v popular or have forage analysis done.

If the horse already has ulcers then you need gastro guard et al.

Activated charcoal can be helpful in cribbers, as is living out 24.7 and making sure they never run out of food.

Just to clarify, the Norvite Minerals, Everyday and Specialist, balance the trace elements and major minerals of the soils typically found in the North of Scotland based on forage mineral analysis. They are not a digestive aid nor do they balance the pH of the stomach of the horse. There are separate products for those specific purposes. A mineral supplement is fed on a daily basis continuously to balance the diet of the horse a little like a human may take vitamin tablets or products like Berroca. The gut balancers are then used when needed eg changes to feed, the introduction of spring grass/winter forage, pre and post worming, pre and post competition or travelling or any situation that maybe stressful or possibly on a continuous basis for horses with diagnosed or suspected ulcers.
Brewers Yeast is used for a variety of different reasons and maybe used as a stand alone feed or incorporated into a supplement to enhance one specific function. There are a number of exceedingly good products from a variety of manufacturers that use Brewers Yeast. It should be noted that as with all things there are different brewers yeasts.
In most mineral supplements and balancers for horses nutritionists struggle for the space to fit everything in they would like to incorporate. As a result everything is in there for a specific reason - there are no waste products in balancers or supplements from reputable companies.

Be really careful about mixing and matching balancers and supplements - read what everything has in and make sure you are not overdosing - it is very easy to take things to toxic levels if you don't know what you are doing. For example Pink Powder is a complete supplement, you would not feed it at full rate alongside the Norvite Specialist supplement at full rate nor alongside a balancer at full rate. Some nutrients you can feed lots of without doing any harm for example Vitamin E, others not so for example Selenium.

Ask at your local feed store for advice so that you get the diet right for your area. Feeding a horse with ulcers is about the whole diet and management not just the supplement.

Thanks! I have put him on the norvite digestive supp and the results are amazing!! I tried the charcol but didn't make any differance.. Also never seen a diff with pp. So I think ill stick to this and the everyday supp from norvite! Super pleased coz he isn't having runny poo anymore! Thanks for all ur help!

Can I just say that that's a really expensive price for Coligone and you can buy it cheaper than that - also - if you buy larger quantities it works out at 30% cheaper and you can reduce the amount fed on a daily basis so it's not as expensive to maintain.
