A link on pinworms http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=583
I posted this in NL last night http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=369687 asking for advice on worms for friends pony. Someone posted a link describing pinworms and this does sound like all of the symptoms my friends pony has.
I have googled pinworms and have gone on loads of websites reading up on them, however, the sites only explain symptoms, where the worms come from and what they do, to disinfect stables, to clean their bums and worm them as treatment.
What I would like to know, is how do you know you have got rid of the worms (as pinworm does not show up on egg worm counts). I can only assume it is confirmed by the horse stopping rubbing? Once wormed, will the worms come out in their poo (as they don't show up in poo when infected)?
Field wise - the pony is in a herd of horses turned out 24/7. It is likely they have all been infected too. Once the horses are wormed, do you do it in the contaminated field and move them a day later? Or what do you do?
I read that the eggs can stay on pasture for 4 months before they are ineffective. I assume the field will have to be poo picked and rested for at least 4 months. Is there any sprays which may help kill off the eggs?
I should be grateful if anyone has any knowledge or experience in treating pinworms and fields where infected horses have grazed.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I appreciate any advice you have to offer! xx
