For anyone who is interested in how Pip the border collie is getting on I thought I would post some pics from our recent trip to the beach. He is 9 months now and very much a proper dog. We went to the Isle of Wight for a half-term day out so he had a journey across the Solent on the car ferry (for those who don't know it is very dog friendly. Dogs are allowed anywhere outside and there is about half of the top deck inside that is dog friendly). We spent most of the day on the beach and also took a trip across the island on the train. He thought the beach was fabulous fun but wasn't mad keen on the train. They have old London underground trains on their main line and they are very bumpy and noisy. Not great for a noise sensitive dog. After about twenty mins he settled down and went to sleep though so it is all good for his ongoing education. Luckily in the last couple of weeks he has really mastered bringing his ball back and immediately dropping it to be re-thrown. We don't play much ball at home so it has taken a while for this to click. Having that sorted made for lots of fun in the surf. We went to Sandown and Shanklin beaches which were great and not busy at all. Pip was beautifully behaved, as ever, even when other people's dogs were not so. It is so great having a dog that you can rely on to come back from other people's feral dogs/children as soon as you ask him. Our lurcher had a great day too. He isn't brilliant with other dogs so spent quite a bit of time on his lead but when it was quiet he had his turn at racing around fetching the tennis ball from the sea.

Does anyone have any good beach recommendations for the south coast? We live in Wiltshire so within a reasonable drive of there for a day trip would be great.

Great pictures! Looks like a great day out.

We took the Westie to the IOW on holiday last year, and found it generally dog-friendly everywhere (unlike Guernsey where dogs weren't even welcome in some pub gardens!).

Looks like they had a great time, I bet they slept well when they got home!

How I miss the "dog friendly" UK sometimes, NZ is anything but.
