PIPSQUEAK 1 - Rosie

Sarnie was left to put her feet up this weekend (we won't mention the drssage schooling session on Saturday that left me on the verge of tears with frustration :( - we did then put a jump up and both cheered up :D)

Actually the weekend didn't start well either as on turning the lorry ignition I found the fuel tank totally empty. Some unspeakable person (who I will murder if I ever catch in the act  ) had totally drained the tank again leaving not enough to even move it. Thanks to Henry_horn via Facebook I have a few idea on prevention in future I hope (it doesn't involve a shot gun -this time :D)

So anyway having whipped down to get a few cans of fuel and then taken the lorry down to top up to a useable level we were running late :( We were taking Rosie show jumping to a local venue luckily we arrived in good time. My mood was not improved as it was the first time putting studs in and Rosie decided it was impossible to stand on 3 legs whilst at a show . By this time I was hot flustered and threatening to go home again :o

Warmed up well although we are struggling to get a good even contact at the moment (Teeth done again this week so no excuse there  . Popped the warm up fences neatly and went in. We were entered in the 80cm which is the biggest competitive class she has jumped to date. I was surprised how green she went on me I forget quite how little she has done and also that this was her first jumping outside. She propped into the first two fences and cat leapt them, she then improved but backed right off the doubles including the last where she had a rail.

I was disappointed with this round but hoped she had gained from it. We discussed jumping the class again, going home or jumping the next class. I decided to be brave (maybe foolish  and jump the 90cm as height is not an issue. Nearly backed out again when I saw they had put a water tray in at 6. All I can say is what a contrast she jumped a super round yes she is still green in her turns and outline but kept a good tempo and jumped neatly for a lovely confident clear including the water tray!. We did have 1 time fault which was no bad thing as I wanted to finish on a good note and may have been tempted to do the jump off particularly as there were only 3 clears.

So very pleased and hopefully still on course to do some BE second half of the season. She is not easy but quite rewarding

PIPSQUEAK 2 - Pippa

So onto day 2 and it was Pippa's turn. Pippa belongs to a good friend of mine and although has been on the market no one was interested :D so it looks like we will be having a season eventing her then selling her :( (Anyone want to buy her for me? ;) ) Pippa used to belong to another forum many miles away

It was Pippa's first ODE, 2nd ever dressage test and only 3rd xc country round. We were at Chyverton which built courses to BE standard but never ran BE as they were offered silly dates :( . We were entered in the BE90 section which I have to say had a few combinations that were more suited to the level above!

The dressage was her expected weak link yet she surprised me by warming up softly and not showing the tension she can. The test I was over the moon with far better than I could have hoped for, by no means perfect and plenty of improvement particularly in the canter which wasn't straight. However as I originally would have been happy with correct strike offs (it wasn't happening when I schooled her the day before  ) I thought it was pretty good.

Scored 31.4 which put us into 3rd place less than a percent behind the joint leaders. Show jumping was on the arena and not up to height, I was a little worried Pippa might fall over it! Just jumped one practice jump and went in as felt that make her sharper and less causal over the small fences. Went so quickly Mum (video person :o ) missed the first half of the round.

Clear round was a relief as a fence down at that size would have been frustrating. Quick change for cross country, Pippa is awesome in this phase very powerful and genuine but sometimes a bit overbold. Flew the first 3

Then stadied for a drop to a skinny brush, over a few simple ones before a house down a slope and over the corner. Slightly missed my line here and jumped it wider than intended but Pippa has scope to burn. Up the step and over the pasty before quite a meaty coffin, narrow house two strides, decent ditch and 2 strides log. Despite me shortening her up for it she launched over the ditch and took a stride out to the log! Think she needs something a bit bigger!

The last 3 fences were a water which we plunged into (problems in the future could be that she launches too big in!), owl hole (which was rather a small hole to my mind :o ) .

A long wait and it looked like we were to be second but the leader missed a fence and was eliminated so we won. :D:D:D Perfect end to a great day. Now planning some events at BE100 starting with Bovington :) .

Excellent she's lovely I can see why you like her. I didn't realise she was for sale. Hope you find someone to buy her who let's you keep the ride :)

She looks awesome XC :D

Aw good pipsqueaks!! Pippa looks lovely....if I win the Euromillions she's yours!! Re Sarnie and the Dressage...while schooling Dol this eve I remembered something I used to do with her for flat schooling that may work for you. An old trainer got me to use jumps as a reward so a movement goes well, pop a small fence. It's unconventional but worked for us and helps break up a session and keep focus!

What a great weekend! :D

I was at Chyverton too, it was such a great day wasn't it? I don't suppose you have any idea why they don't allow schooling around that course do you?

I was only in the baby class but I was a bit :O at some of the things the higher classes had to jump - looked like a mini Badminton (in my eyes, hehe!)

Good luck for the next event :)

Thanks hope your numbers come up :D Have tried that in the past with jumps it doesn't help she either pretends she is terrified of them or jumps them when she is not meant to :( . On a more positive note she went a lot better tonight :)

Clever Rosie but esp clever Pippie! So pleased she has scope for so much more than was whispered at the start. I happen to know that she won her two dressage tests under listed judges in far away land - so don't let her pretend it's all new :D

Well done again on a fab weekend :)

They don't want it over used as it is never the same for competitions if everyone has schooled over it. They are opening it for a week in July though after the next ODE. See their website.

I had forgotten that :o The listed judge gave her an 8 for paces :)

Pippa is fabulous. I just love her type even if she is a mare ;)

Rosie looks like she will be giving you some good fun later in the year - is she a keeper or seller?

Unfortunately with Sarnie's expensive tastes the second one always has to be a seller, then again doesn't mean she may or may not stick around for a year or two!

Both are looking great, Rosie looks like she could be a proper little madam if you let her. ;) I do like Pippa though: big, bay, what's not to like? :p

mmm more nice mares, my favourites :D (don't tell the CBs :o). Excellent luck that Pippa seems to be hanging around ;), and Rosie looks like she could be rather fun once she's convinced that it's all about working with you :p ;) :D

Ah excellent! I've been away from HHO for a while but it's lovely to see you have some 'new' (or maybe not?!) ones coming along nicely. Do you still have Ash? Have an awesome time at Bovy! :)

What a very satisfying weekend, well done! Rosie doesn't look easy but the difference between rounds 1 and 2 says a lot about how quickly she learns - clever horse :). As for Pippa, a star in the making and she's so shiny :D :)

Rosie is really sweet, definitely got the hang of it the second time round :)

Pippa is gorgeous, she looks like she really eats up the ground x country aswell. Am surprised you had no luck in selling her so far she looks fab.

It was such a lovely day!! Unfortunately we didn't do as well as you but in a way I was pleased because it confirmed we had made the right decision to not XC him. 29.3 dressage, clear sj but 3 stops xc. T was happy because she rode through the finish as opposed to having to walk home!! If he had gone clear I would have been thinking I should book him in for Bicton and possibly set them up for another 'E' and an expensive one at that. He is doing really well at BSJA & BD so we'll stick with that (oh, and poss some 153 workers). He may come right XC we'll see, if we sell him I'll give you a shout about Pippa.

We followed you and Rosie into the 90cm class and can confirm it really was a lovely round, a pleasure to watch. Had to laugh though, was so clearly an eventer in the ring as at one point before the bell I swear you were IN the water tray!
I opted for the SJ rather than the ODE next day even though I love the "secret" course at Chyvy, as our SJ is appalling. Actually, strike that, mine is, the mare would probably be quite useful without the muppet on top. May do a separate post on that!

thanks for the vids SJ, I have just been educated on the fact that you don't give up and say bummer they stopped when the SJ are 80cm, you can make them go over it (well you can not sure bout me yet!) much to LizzieJs amusement that I said I would have done that. Have been duly informed now! :D
