Piriton - allergic reaction ?

Has anyone found their horse to have a reaction to piriton?
I introduced shakeeaze and 5 piriton to my horses feed and that evening he came in incredibly itchy like he was having a reaction to something. Really distressed with it , rearing up and itching himself raw. He would only stand still if I was scratching him firmly :/
Still itchy today but not as bad.

Have stopped feeding them today.
 
I would guess that it was the Shakeeaze, goodness knows what the ingredients in that are. Having said that, I can't take Piriton because it has maize starch as a filler and I am allergic to it. I use the sugar-free Piriteze instead.
 
My vet recommended Piriteze and NOT Piriton for my dog for that reason actually-other species to human with have a different reaction to starches.

I wouldn’t have expected a reaction like that from 25mcg dosage though...!

Even one Piriton tablet sets my reaction off, unfortunately, and while obviously his body weight will be more than mine, it is possible that a small amount might have affected him. I would suspect the Shakeeaze ingredients first though.

You can have an allergy to just about anything, one that is used a lot now and has less side effects, https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/3474/pil. If you buy them from the supermarket they are both very cheap

Very true, however all the chlorphenamine maleate that is sold otc contains maize starch. The branded Piriteze liquid, whose active ingredient is cetirizine hydrochloride, is the only otc liquid that I can find, none of whose ingredients are derived from maize.
 
I think your find none of the anti histamine syrups contain starch devived from maize , including piriton syrup and generic chlorpheniramine syrups which are cheaper than Piriteze .

No they don't contain starch, I said that they contain ingredients derived from maize, such as erythritol. I react to them all. The only one I have found is the sugar-free Piriteze, which oddly doesn't contain erythritol, where you might think it would.
 
Ingredients of Pirion ......each 5ml contains. 2 mg of chlorphenamine maleate as the active ingredient. The syrup also contains sucrose, glycerol, ethanol, tingle flavour, peppermint oil, water and, as preservative, a mixture of methyl, ethyl and propyl hydroxybenzoates (E218, E214 and E216).

You may find it causes drowsiness though whereas ceririzine is much less likely to .

i started the shake free on Wednesday evening, i gave piriton and a second shake free Thursday morning, my partner said he was a little shakey in the morning after his feed, i assumed he wanted to go out. I dont know how quick a allergic reaction can take to start, if it can be instant it was likely the piriton if it takes a while it could have been the shake free. He has his feed at 6.30 am and came in incredibly itchy and agitated 12 hours later :(

needless to say i stopped both right away, it really took me back. Ive taken him off everything at the moment besides grass and hay.
 
The antihistamine most people use for horses is ceterizine hydrochlorate, you can buy it very cheaply under the generic name from Groupon or Pharmacy First. I'm about to use it for my itcher - between 0.2 and 0.4 mg per 1kg bodyweight twice a day.
I *think* that is what is in Piriteze

eeek i used the only piriton i could see in the chemist Chlorphenamine Maleate. I wonder if it is worth trying the one you mention above but dont want the same thing to happen.
