piriton for horses?

I expect this should be in veterinary but I know more of you hang out in here.

Can my horse take piriton? My scientist head leads me to believe that it would be effective but I just wondered if there were other things I should know about.

Does anyone do this? How many pills do they mash up if they do?

I've got a very itchy pony and I'm just mulling over things which might help.
 
A little shetland on our yard used to take 2 tablets a day for her sweet - itch . Results weren't major, but definitly seemed to make life a bit more comfortable.
 
My friends yorkshire terrier gets piriton for her hayfever (tiny amount)

Ponio is definitely allery ridden. She's come up in lumps and bumps all of a sudden whilst out in the field. She's been in for a couple of days and has completely gone down again.

I've moved her to another field where hopefully she won't find anything to aggravate it but was just wondering if a bit of antihistamine might be useful as a preventative action.

Just really don't know how much a horse would need!
 
just read you reply. i use global herbs pollen X for my boy as he used to react to the pollen etc in his field and get grass glands and lumps and bumps and the results were amazing
 
There was a thread on Veterinary a month or two ago about this; it included quantities (10 a day if I remember rightly). It seems that lots of people use piriton successfully for allergy / hay fever type problems with their horses.
 
Mine has them in winter for his urticaria - 10 in the morning & 10 in the evening. He is 15.2, about 485kg. They don't make the rash disappear completely, but they do reduce it from huge weals & plaques all over his body to a few small lumps on his neck. I gradually reduce down to 6 in the morning & 6 in the evening as he gets better. Less than this I don't think (for his size) would make a difference to him. They certainly do make him more comfortable though

He suffers no side effects - i.e drowsiness etc.
 
hi my horse had a bad reaction to a fly bite last week, he was covered in huge hand size lumps and he was prescribed 12 tablets once a day for three days (just your usual piriton from over the counter). hes a 26 year old 15.2 arab hope this helps
 
Havent read other replies but i used to give antihistamines to my headshaker. Just tesco/asda ones, the active drug is citirizine hydrochloride. Gave him one tablt a day either in a small feed, or cut a slit into a carrot and shoved the tablet in there. Worked a treat

Best way to get them is to go to your local pharmacy and ask for a dispensary pack of cetirizine - much much cheaper than what you can get over the counter!!
 
I feed Piriton to my Sweet Itch mare. It's no miracle cure, but I buy in bulk and can actually get it cheaper through a Pharmacy, if I ask (I ordered online, got 500 for £11.summat). I went by the weight dosage of 1 tablet per 60Kg. Chloe is 300Kg, so she gets 6 a day. Hard to say how much of an effect it has, but she certainly doesn't have any new wounds and the old ones are healing with Piriton and sudocrem combined, together with fly rug when flied are bad.
