Can anyone tell me if the human pills are ok for horses? And what kind of dose they would need?

My boy is a little sniffy and his eyes are running slightly also - exactly the same as me at the moment!!

I know a friend of mine uses a nasal spray for her horse, I just wondered if pills work?

Not sure about using them on horses, check with your Vet, but if he says its OK, then get Chlorpheniramine, which is the name of the drug in Piriton, but is much cheaper to buy from the Chemist.

I'll see how he goes for a few days and will check with my vet if I want to try anything.

I'm bored in work was just throwing some ideas around!!

my horse has been on anti histamines...vet gave me a perscription for the chemist, however, the amount you have to feed them to get the disired effect os crazily ezpensive. my mare was on ucerax, at a cost of around £15 a day. i have to give 20 i think it was 3 times a day! if you work out mg/kg weight for humans then for horse you will realise it is a lot to feed. more valid for a dog i guess as similar weight to human!

I'm sure I've read lots of posts from people saying that Piriton is fine for horses. However at the moment I'm trying something call Mixed Pollens from Equus Health. It's a homopathic remedy for pollen allergies. I've been trying it for a couple of weeks, difficult to say whether it's working as the weather hasn't really been bad (for hayfever). Watch this space!

I know a few people who use piriton/chlopheniramine tablets for their horses - anywhere up to 30 tablets per day. You can buy them in bottles of 500 i think for prob around £10
Oh yes! but def check with vet first!

I asked my vet about it as my horse gets (got) terrible sweet itch... that was the same dosage that I was quoted roughly, 20-30 tablets a day so very costly.

I now use homeopathy drops (Cullicoides and grasses mixed) and they work brilliantly

yes a lot of horses use them put they need a lot of tablets so works out exspensive have you tried pollen x from global herbs in sted?

I was looking into this last week and could find no info on giving piriton/chlorophenamine to horses. I did, however, find published veterinary studies on the use of cetirizine hydrochloride (brand new zirtek, also in morrisons own hayfever pills), where dosage tested was between 0.2-0.4mg/ kg BW. Human pills are 10mg.

Thanks for that - I take cetirizine hydrochloride as it happens!
I'm going to see how he goes, if it affects him anymore than it is now I will have a chat to my vet.
