Need some help as vets being no help what so ever. my horse has hayfever/allergys i asked bout giving hay fever tablets thay say it never makes much difference and would prob need at least 40 to 50 a day??
I have been giving him human ones and he usually gets 4 tablets seems to help but its costing me a fortune!!!!
I was speaking to a lady who uses a different vet and she said her vet has no problem giving her a bottle of pititon 500 tablets for 15 pound?
Why will my vets no help me???
They basically said they never heard of any horses given anything like that.
i spoke to the receptionist she suggested looking online to buy some but cant seem to find any websites that sell them?
Anyone help me?
 
If you do a search for threads containing the word piriton you will find there have been a number of them lately and several people give ideas on dosage and where to get supplies.

If it helps, I use Naf Easybreathing on a daily basis, and Beconase spray at this time of year an hour or so before our HS pony is ridden, and both of these really help.:)
 
have searched most people just say how many to give not the name of web sites i could go and buy some?
 
Antihistamines have very little effect on horses and you do need to feed bucket loads to get any effect (unfortunately they have a very short half life!). Your vet would probably want to treat the horse symptomatically eg Ventipulmin to open the horse's airways?

That may be the reason your vet is being 'unhelpful'. My friend has just gone through exactly the same conversation with her vet.

yeah, he is on ventapulmin, he was on it last year aswell, have just been speaking to so many people telling me that vets are giving them hay fever tablets i just dont understand why there vets give them and mine wont?
He got terrible eye infection last year aswell, his eyes are starting to get puffy and runny :(
 
My 13.2 has 4 tabs twice daily. We buy them from the local chemist, but ask for Chlorpheniramine ( the drug name, not a brand) and they will be much cheaper
 
Take care lyna as a dose high enough to have an effect can cause neurological effects in the horse and make him drowsy and less aware of his surroundings. That could be dangerous either when riding or just turned out in the field.
 
Yes, and remember to slowly reduce the doseage as you come off the tablets, dont take him straight off them.

The ones my Vet gave to my horse a long while ago are called Zaditen Tablets 1mg 60 Tabs

I think we started on 8 per day twice per day for the time she needed them, then reduced to 6 x twice per day, 4 x twice per day, 2 x twice per, then she came off them
 
Beware of overdosing. Make sure you try the over-counter antihistamines in conjunction with your vet. Looking up the symptoms for overdose I found all sorts of side effects! I know drowsiness could be seen as a bonus (:)) but there are other effects such as heart arrythmia and the list goes on.
 
We give our ponies with sweet itch three piriton tablets on midgey days, without problems. Never seen them drowsy.

Our local pharmacist buys the pots of piriton and sells them to horsey people only! They charge about seven pounds....
 
The weather is getting hot again and I found a great place to get the pots of Piriton Tablets 500s.

Saves popping out thousands of the generic ones from the local chemist.

Had the same conversation with my vet on Friday, she said the antihistamines don't generally work very well on horses. I can't remember the name, but she said that human anti convulsants drugs work well for this problem, head shaking from summer allergies

She is getting back to me on Monday, with the cost, I will let you know.
